MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/23/19)---Concordia made a pair of first-period goals hold up and beat St. Benedict 2-1 to gain a split in the 2-game series.
The split is the second straight for the Cobbers to open the conference season. CC is now 4-3-0 in all games and 2-2-0 in the MIAC. The Bennies are now 2-3-0 overall and 1-3-0 in league play.
Concordia posted its offense in the game in a 5:25 stretch in the first period. Sophomore Brenna Mjoness got the Cobbers on the board with a power play goal at 4:04. Hannah Christian and Anna Ballweber picked up the assists on Mjoness' first goal of the season.
Freshman McKenzie Oelkers scored the eventual game-winning goal just before the midway point of the opening period. Oelkers notched her second goal of the year at 9:29 with the assists going to Sara Baumann and Allison O'Kane.
The Cobber defense would take over from that point. Concordia limited St. Benedict to only 19 shots in the final two periods of play and freshman goalie Kiana Flaig stopped 18 of those shots to earn her third win of the season. The Bennies could only muster a single goal in the final five minutes of the third period and Concordia was able to hang on for the win.
The Cobbers outshot St. Benedict 34-32. Oelkers had a team-high five shots on goal while Mjoness added four.
Concordia was 1-for-2 on the power play while the Bennies went 0-for-3 on their power play chances.
