Slow Starts Cost Cobbers In Northfield
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/8/26)---Concordia couldn't contain the St. Olaf offense and dropped a pair of conference games on the road. The Cobbers staged a late rally in the opener only to fall 13-6 and then gave up five runs in the first two innings of the finale and lost 9-2.
The two losses stopped Concordia's 2-game MIAC game win streak. CC is now 8-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Oles move to 7-15 in all games and 2-4 against league opponents.
Sophomore outfielder Mason Henry led the Cobber. He hit a home run in Game 1, had hits in both ends of the doubleheader and finished the day 3-for-8 with three RBI.
Ben Shumansky and Cael Olson had 2-hit games in Game 2 with Olson driving in a pair of runs.
Game 1: Concordia 6, St. Olaf 13
The Cobbers fell behind 6-0 after the first inning, trailed 13-2 and then used a 4-run seventh inning to close the gap, but the deficit was too much to overcome as they dropped the opener.
After the Oles posted the six runs in the first frame, Concordia answered in the second when Jake Gruebele lined an RBI single to left field, bringing home Jack Primus for the Cobbers' first run of the game.
Concordia added another run in the third inning as Primus delivered with an RBI double to left-center, scoring Alex Anderson to trim the deficit to 8–2. However, the Oles continued to extend their advantage, pushing across single runs in the fourth and a four-run outburst in the fifth to stretch the lead to 13–2.
Despite trailing by eleven, the Cobbers continued to compete at the plate. In the seventh inning, Concordia put together its biggest rally of the day. Drew Dorsey scored on a passed ball before Henry launched a three-run home run to center field, scoring Luke Knudsen and Anderson. The long ball was the first of Henry's collegiate career and his three RBI upped his season total to 10 which is second most on the team.
Gruebele and Primus also added RBIs as part of the Cobbers' six-run output, while Anderson reached base three times via walks and scored twice.
Brayden Wolfgram got the start on the bump for CC and was saddled with his second loss of the year. Alex Claussen provided 3.0 innings of relief, and Cullen Norland closed the game with a scoreless sixth inning.
Concordia was out hit 15-3 in the opener but drew seven walks.
Game 2: Concordia 2, St. Olaf 9
It was the same storyline in the second game as St. Olaf was able to grab the momentum in the early innings. They plated three runs in the first and then two more in the second to grab a 5-0 lead.
The Cobbers' two runs in Game 2 came in the eighth inning when Henry led off with a single to right field and Wolfgram reached on an error. Olson then came through with a 2-strike, 2-out, 2-run single to center field.
Concordia finished the second game with eight total hits. Olson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Henry and Shumansky also recorded two-hit games. Anderson and Wolfgram provided the other base knocks for CC.
Cobber starter Ben Trutwin battled through 4.1 innings and then turned it over to the bullpen. Vann Olson and Clayton Erickson provided relief, with Erickson tossing two scoreless innings to close the game.
Concordia will return home to face Macalester on Saturday, Apr. 11 at 1 p.m.
