Late First-Half Stretch Stops Cobbers
Concordia was outscored 21-2 in the final nine minutes of the first half and lost 94-65 at Division II Minn.-Crookston.
STORY LINE: Concordia was outscored in each half of their game against Division II Minn.-Crookston and lost 94-65 in the second game of their doubleheader at Crookston. The Cobbers were outscored 21-2 at the end of the first half and couldn't recover as they fell in the third game of the season.
RECORDS: Concordia has their 1-game win streak come to an end and is now 1-2 on the season. Crookston wins for the fourth straight game and is now 4-1 on the year. It is the best start to a season for the Golden Eagles since they joined NCAA Division II in 1998.
DECIDING MOMENTS: Concordia took a 3-point lead at 23-20 when Tommy Schyma connected on a field goal with 9:14 left to play in the first half but then the Cobbers would go cold and get outscored 21-2 for the rest of the period. Concordia went 1-for-12 and committed four turnovers during that stretch that saw the game go from a 3-point lead to a 41-25 halftime deficit.
FREE THROW FACTS: The Cobbers were outscored 26-11 at the free throw line. CC went 11-for-16 (68.8%) in the game while Crookston was 26-for-28 (92.9%) which included 16-for-16 in the second half. Concordia has now been outscored 66-19 at the foul line this year and opponents have taken 47 more free throws than the Cobbers.
BRYDEN BRINGS IT: Sophomore guard Bryden Urie put up career numbers against Crookston. He finished with a career-high 25 points. Urie had three 20-point games last season but none were over 23 points. He also led the team in rebounds and assists on Sunday. Urie added six boards and three assists to his point total. Urie is leading the Cobbers through the first three games of the season with a 12.3 ppg average.
THE WRIGHT STUFF: Freshman guard Cal Wright posted his second double-figure scoring game of the season. Wright went 5-for-8 from the floor and finished with 11 points. He had 13 points in the opener at Minn.-Morris and has a 10.3 ppg average which is third on the squad.
UP NEXT: Concordia will have an 8-day break before returning to action on Monday, Nov. 26 when they play at St. Scholastica at 6 p.m. The Saints are 0-2 on the season and lost 86-75 at Dubuque (Iowa) on Saturday.
