STORY LINE: A Tommy Schyma 3-pointer and then a drive and hoop by Bryden Urie brought Concordia back from a 3-point deficit and gave the Cobbers a 69-67 lead with 23-second to play but then No.17-ranked St. John's came up with a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left on the clock and the Cobbers fell 70-69.
RECORDS: The loss keeps the Cobbers 1 game out of sixth place for the final playoff spot in the league standings. CC is now 6-11 in MIAC games and 7-15 overall. The Johnnies win for the third straight game and remain in second place in the conference. SJU is now 14-3 in league play and 18-4 overall.
FUN FIRST HALF: Concordia never trailed in the final 15 minutes first half as they took a 12-11 lead on a Tommy Schyma layup and went on to build a 37-24 lead with just over 6-minutes to play. The 13-point lead was the largest of the game for either team. The Cobbers wound up taking an 8-point lead into halftime. Concordia shot 62.1% (18-for-29) from the floor in the first half and made 40.0% (2-for-5) of their shots from outside the arc. CC also outrebounded St. John's 13-10 and had three steals and two blocks.
The Cobbers scored 42 points in the first half which is the highest point total in an opening half this season for Concordia. In their first game against St. John's, CC only had 44 points for the entire contest.
FREE THROW SUCCESS: Concordia shot 90.9% (10-for-11) from the free throw line in the game. That is the second highest percentage for the Cobbers this season. CC connected on 91.7% (11-for-12) of their foul attempts against St. Scholastica.
WHERE DID THE BENCH GO?: The two teams combined for 139 points in the game and 126 of those were scored by the starting 10 players. Concordia only used eight players in the game and had six points from their non-starters. St. John's used 10 players and had seven bench points.
FOUR ON THE FLOOR: Concordia had four starters finish in double figures. Jordan Davis and Bryden Urie each had a team-high 15 points while Collin Larson added 14 and Tommy Schyma came away with 13 points. Davis and Schyma led the team in rebounds with six each.
UP NEXT: Concordia will continue their trek towards the No.6 playoff spot when they play at Bethel on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. The Royals are tied for third place with a 12-5 record and have won seven straight games.
