NEW ULM, Minn. (1/13/20)--- Concordia repeatedly banged on the door of a non-conference win at Martin Luther but was never able to step inside and lost 73-72 to the Knights.
The Cobbers had one final chance to tie, or take the lead, with 13-seconds left in regulation. Concordia was able to inbound the ball in the frontcourt after senior Andrew Holen stole the ball with CC trailing 71-69.
Concordia put the ball in play and tried to get it into the post but the ball was stolen. The Cobbers quickly fouled the Martin Luther player who took possession of the ball and the made both free throws to push he score to 73-69 with 2-seconds left on the clock. Ian Schafer brought the final score to 73-72 when he sank a 40-foot 3-pointer as time expired.
The loss, in the final non-conference game of the year drops the Cobbers' record to 2-11 on the year. Concordia ends with a 2-3 mark against non-MIAC opponents. Martin Luther ups its record to 3-10 on the season.
Concordia trailed by four points at the break at 38-34 but then the second half went back-and forth with six lead changes and six tie scores. The Cobbers' biggest lead of the game came at the 13:42 mark of the second half when Adam Daggett drained a 3-pointer to give CC a 52-48 lead.
The Cobbers held the advantage in shooting from the floor and outside the arc but the Knights won the game at the free throw line. Concordia shot 42.4% (28-for-66) from the floor and made six 3-pointers (6-for-20) was compared to 39.1% (25-for-64) shooting from the field and five made shots from outside the arc for Martin Luther. The Knights doubled up the Cobbers in free throw attempts. CC went 10-for-13 (76.9%) from the foul line while MLC was 18-for-26 (69.2%).
Both teams had 36 rebounds and both squads had 40 points in the paint.
Concordia had all five of its starters score at least eight points in the game. Junior guard Bryden Urie led all players with 15 points. He also came away with a game-high nine rebounds.
Ty Setness and Daggett both had 14 points each. Setness also came away with eight rebounds.
Jacob Fredrickson and Schafer rounded out the starting five for Concordia and both players had eight points. Fredrickson added five rebounds in his 30 minutes of play.
INSIDE STAT INFO: Junior Ty Setness, filling in for a sick John Reiten, made the most of his first collegiate start by putting up career-high numbers in both points and rebounds. Setness went 7-for-11 from the floor and finished with 14 points and eight boards. His previous career-high point total was 12 points which came last season against Carleton. The 14 points marks the first time this season he has been in double figures in points.
UP NEXT: Concordia returns home to host Gustavus on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 5:15 p.m. The game is part of Youth Night where kids 14 and under will be admitted for free. The Gusties are in fifth place in the MIAC with a 5-4 league record. GAC is 5-9 in all games.
