Schell Goes Carnarvon Airport On Macalester
Payton Schell was as hot as Carnarvon Airport in Australia on Wednesday as he dropped a career-high 34 points on Macalester in the Cobbers' 93-84 win against the Scots.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/21/26)---What did the Carnarvon Airport in Western Australia and first-year guard Payton Schell have in common?
Both were really hot on Wednesday.
The Carnarvon Airport recorded the hottest temperature at 118 degrees and Schell went 7-for-11 from outside the arc and scored a career-high 34 points in the Cobbers' 93-82 win at Macalester.
The 34 points scored by Schell are the most by any Concordia player this season, two more than Jacob Cook's 32 against Wis.-River Falls, and the most by a CC player in a single game since Matthew Johnson dropped 42 on Crown in 2022.
Schell's 34 points is also a modern-day program record for points in a single game by a Cobber freshman. He eclipsed the mark of 30 points set by Dylan Inniger in 2022.
Most of Concordia's offensive output came in the second half. The Cobbers led 35-34 at the half but then shot 62.5% (20-for-32) from the field and 46.2% (6-for-13) from distance and scored 58 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
The 58 points in the second half are a season high in a single half and the 93 total points are the tops for Concordia in 2026.
Schell led the second-half offensive explosion with 19 points and was 6-for-8 from the floor.
Concordia scored the first eight points of the game and led for almost the entire first period. The Scots were able to use a 7-0 run to take a 28-24 lead with 3:16 left in the half but an 11-3 streak over the next 2:30 allowed the Cobbers to take the 1-point lead into the break.
Macalester (6-12, 1-8 MIAC) took its only lead of the second half after they scored six of the first nine points. Concordia took control of the game with a 14-5 stretch immediately after they fell behind and then blew the game open with an 18-8 stretch midway through the final frame.
Schell earned his first collegiate 30-point game by going 11-for-18 from the floor, 7-for-11 from outside the arc and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
Cook continued his senior-year dominance by recording his third straight double-double and sixth in the past seven games.
He finished with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and also added three assists. Cook fouled out with 3:22 left in the game and played 29 minutes on Wednesday.
Jackson Loge was the third Cobber starter with a double-digit point total. He scored 12 points and had four rebounds.
Concordia will stay on the road and play at Bethel on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.
