A Weekend Of Superlative Success
Concordia posted its highest finish at an MIAC Conference Meet since 2001 and recorded a boatload of team and individual superlatives over the weekend.
HASTINGS, Minn. (5/02/21)---Concordia finished off its record-setting MIAC Championship Meet by posting a second consecutive sub-295 team score and finished in third place at the conference meet. The third-place finish is the highest for the Cobbers since the 2001 season.
It was a weekend of team, and individual superlatives for the Cobbers. The team's 3-day total of 873 (301-280-292) is the lowest 3-round total at an MIAC Championship Meet since the league went to the 3-round format in 2005.
Concordia led the tournament in eagles over the three days at Emerald Greens GC. The Cobbers posted six eagles on the weekend which is a school record for most eagles in a conference meet.
The final team superlative is the fact that the ream scores of 280 on Saturday and 292 on Sunday mark the first time that a Cobber team has posted more than one total under 300 in a single conference meet.
Concordia was led by a pair of individuals who earned MIAC All-Conference honors. Senior Mason Opheim and freshman Samuel Henke posted the lowest single-round totals of any individual on Saturday and Sunday and earned All-Conference honors for the first time in their careers.
Opheim set the conference record for lowest total for 18 holes when he carded a 66 on Saturday. He was at the top, or near the top of the leaderboard, for most of Sunday's final round but ran into trouble on the par 5, 16th hole and finished in a tie for fifth place with a total of 216 (74-66-76).
While Opheim went low on Saturday to earn his All-Conference honor, Henke made his charge up the leaderboard on Sunday. Henke entered the final round in 25th place and proceeded to stay inside the Top 20 on the front nine where he made two birdies to go with a bogey and went out in 35.
Henke earned his All-Conference honor with a stretch of four birdies in six holes on the back 9. He posted five pars and didn't have a blemish on the backside to come home in 32 and post a 67. The 67 was the lowest score of any golfer in the tournament on Sunday and catapulted him into a tie for ninth place. Henke finished with a 3-day total of 220 (74-79-67).
Senior Tyler Bossert recorded the second-most consistent three rounds by a Cobber player. His three scores were all within four shots of one another. Bossert ended the meet with a total of 222 (76-72-74). His final total is the lowest score of his career at a conference meet and he missed out on All-Conference honors by two strokes.
The Cobbers other two freshmen at the meet, Justin Lamp and Ryan Jenson both finished inside the Top 25 to give CC all five players in the Top 25 – another program first.
Lamp shot a 75 on Sunday after firing a 68 on Saturday and completed his first collegiate conference tournament with a total of 224 (81-68-75). His final total got him inside the Top 20 for the meet with an 18th-place finish.
Jenson was the most consistent player for the Cobbers on the weekend. Ho opened with a 77, then dropped three shots on Saturday with a 74 and finished on Sunday with a 76. He placed 23rd with a final total 227.
