Benson Caps Breakout Year At NCAA Championship Meet
Gabe Benson closed out his breakout sophomore season at the NCAA Championship Meet. Benson moved up 46 places on Day 2 but was unable to make the cut to be able to play in the final two rounds.
BOULDER CITY, Nev. (5/15/24)---The good news for Gabe Benson on Day 2 of the NCAA Championship Meet is that he moved up 46 places from his first round on Tuesday. Unfortunately for Benson, it wasn't a high enough climb to get him into the final two rounds of the national meet.
Benson started the final day tied for 162nd place after firing a 78 on Day 1. He then carded a 2-over-par 74 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club on Wednesday and ended the meet is a tie for 116th place.
The two days at the NCAA Meet cap a breakout year for Benson, who became the first player in Cobber men's golf history to compete at the NCAA National Meet.
Benson earned his way to nationals by winning the MIAC Championship Meet – only the second Cobber to ever achieve that feat. He also had six Top 5 finishes during the year and shot five rounds in the 60s.
Benson ended the year with a 72.7 average over the 26 rounds he played in this season. His season average is believed to be the lowest in program history for an entire year.
