Fifth-Minute Goals Spark Five-Goal Flurry

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/08/16)--- The calendar started anew and so did Concordia's ability to have success against teams from Wisconsin. The Cobbers were 1-5-1 in the 12 months of 2015 against teams from Wisconsin but started a new trend in 2016 as they scored five times on their way to a 5-1 win at Wis.-Superior.

The Cobbers entered the game 0-3-1 vs. Scony teams this season and made sure there would not be a fourth loss by scoring four straight goals in the first two periods to take a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.   

Zach Doerring started the Concordia scoring spree in the fifth minute of the first period. He scored at 4:29 on assist from Jon Grebosky. For Grebosky it would be the first of his three assists in the game.

Concordia (6-5-1) duplicated their first-period feat by scoring in the fifth minute of the second period. Freshman Mario Bianchi collected his fifth goal of the year at the 4:26 mark and the Cobbers suddenly led 2-0. Doerring and Grebosky earned the assists on the eventual game winner.

Jordan Christianson and Tucker Coborn added scores before the 12-minute mark of the middle frame to give CC a commanding 4-0 lead. Christianson netted his second goal of the year at 6:07 and then Coborn ended his season-long scoring drought at 11:27. The goal was Coborn's first of the year after scoring seven times last season.

Defenseman Charlie Aus recorded the helpers on both the third and fourth goals of the game and now has a team-leading nine assists for the year. Jeremy Johnson also had an assist on the goal by Coborn.

Superior (4-9-2) broke the shutout in the first minute of the third period but then Grebosky capped the scoring with his sixth goal of the year at 1:29.          

Concordia was outshot 38-30 in the game but that included a 14-6 edge for the Yellowjackets in the third period when the Cobbers were protecting a four-goal lead.

Bianchi had a team-high five shots on goal and fellow freshman Jake Zeleznikar was a plus-four for the game.

Alex Reichle stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced to earn his sixth win of the year. Reichle lowered his season goals against average to 2.81 and now has a 90.9% save percentage.

THE BIG GREBOSKY
After starting the year in a mini "sophomore slump", Jon Grebosky has gone on a scoring spree in the past four games. Grebosky has at least one point in four straight games and has now recorded back-to-back three-point contests. Grebosky now leads the team in scoring with six goals and seven assists for 13 points. Last year he had 20 points in his freshman season.

YOU CAN'T SPELL ASSIST WITHOUT THE "A" AND "S"
Charlie Aus shares 66.7% of the letter in his last name with his favorite past time this season. Aus leads the team in assists with nine and now has three multiple-assist games this year. Aus is currently tied for second in the MIAC in assists by a defenseman.

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will finish up their non-conference schedule for the year when they play at No.14-ranked Wis.-River Falls on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:05 p.m. The Falcons beat St. John's 3-1 on Friday, have won four straight and are now 9-4-2 on the year.
