Henkemeyer-Howe Cleans Up In Series-Opening Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/02/22)---Junior Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe cleaned up the garbage in front of the goal on his way to a hat trick as he led the Cobbers to a 6-3 win over Hamline in the first game of the 2-game series.
Henkemeyer-Howe scored the first three goals for Concordia, the first two came from rebounds in front of the Piper goal, to help CC notch its first conference win of the season.
The win is the first in five games for the Cobbers, who are now 3-4-1 in all games and 1-2-0 in the MIAC. Hamline falls 3-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play.
Concordia never trailed in the game thanks to Henkemeyer-Howe who recorded the first pure hat trick of his college career.
One of the keys to the game for the Cobbers was to take advantage of power play situations, and they accomplished that goal on the very first PP of the game.
Concordia had only scored one power play goal in the last five games before Henkemeyer-Howe matched that total at the 7:44 mark of the first period. He slammed home the rebound after a shot from Liam Haslam was stopped. Cole O'Connell picked up the second assist on the first goal of the game.
Henkemeyer-Howe would double his "garbage goal" total in the final three minutes of the first frame when he set up shop near the HU goal and put home the rebound after a shot from O'Connell.
The Cobbers outshot Hamline 10-3 in the first period and took a 2-0 lead into the opening break.
Henkemeyer-Howe completed the hat trick when he sniped a goal into the top right corner of the net from between the faceoff circles at 7:05 of the second period.
The goal was his team-leading fifth of the year and gives him nine points which is also a team best.
The Pipers got on the board on a quick counter rush up the left side just 98=seconds later.
The 2-goal margin would be as close as Hamline would get for the remainder of the game.
Jack Westlund and Troy Dahlheimer pushed the lead to four goals when they scored 1:48 apart at the back end of the middle frame. Westlund finished off a perfect pass from Ben Luedtke to give CC a 4-1 lead at 12:57, and then Dahlheimer lit the lamp from the top of the faceoff circles just before he got hit by a check at 14:45. Westlund's goal was his first in a Cobber uniform. Haslam earned his second helper of the night on the goal by Dahlheimer.
Hamline would score a pair of power play goals at 11:25 and 17:09 of the third period, before freshman Caden Triggs slid home an empty-net goal with just 35 ticks left on the clock to bring the final score line to 6-3.
Hanson O'Leary and Joe Harguindeguy recorded the assists on Triggs' goal which also came on the power play.
Concordia outshot Hamline 39-21 for the game with Henkemeyer-Howe leading all players with seven shots on goal.
Senior goalie Jackson Nelson made 18 saves to earn his first win of the season.
CC was 2-for-6 on the power play, while Hamline was 2-for-4 with the man advantage. The two power play goals are a season high for the Cobbers.
