Harguindeguy Leads Quintet Of Cobber Award Winners
Freshman Joe Harguindeguy was named the very first MIAC Rookie of the Year award winner and led a group of five Cobbers players who earned conference postseason honors.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/09/23)---Concordia was well represented on the MIAC postseason award list. The Cobbers had five players earn conference honors.
Topping the award list was freshman Joe Harguindeguy (La Habra, Calif.), who was named the very first MIAC Rookie of the Year honor. The award was put into place by the league coaches at the start of the 2022-23 season.
Harguindeguy was also named to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team. He is joined by Liam Haslam (Toronto, Ont.), Cole O'Connell (Moorhead, Minn.), Matt Fitzgerald (Bemidji, Minn.) and Jaret Lalli (Bemidji, Minn.) as conference award winners.
Haslam and O'Connell were placed on the MIAC All-Conference Team, while Fitzgerald earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors and Lalli was placed on the MIAC All-Playoff Team.
The five players helped Concordia finish with a 7-2-1 record in the last 10 conference games. That 10-game push helped the Cobbers place fourth in the final league standings. CC finished the year with a 9-6-1 MIAC record and a 12-12-2 overall mark.
Harguindeguy led the team in scoring in the 16 league games. He finished with seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. That total was good for sixth best in the MIAC. Harguindeguy had at least one point in 10 conference games and posted six multiple-point games. His top output came against the Cobbers' playoff-clinching sweep at St. Mary's when he had two goals and an assist in the first game.
Haslam was one of the anchors on the Cobbers' blue line. He finished third on the team in scoring to become one of the top scoring defenseman in the MIAC in 2023. Haslam had two goals and 10 assists for 12 points. In addition to his ability to go forward, Haslam was also a tough presence in front of the net and adept at blocking shots.
Despite being a defenseman, Haslam led the team in game-winning goals against MIAC opponennts. He had the game-deciding score at Bethel, and then again in the series opener at St. Mary's.
O'Connell was the only Concordia player to earn MIAC All-Conference honors for the second straight season.
O'Connell was right behind Harguindeuy on the Cobbers scoring list. He finished with five goals and team-best 11 helpers for 16 points. O'Connell had the huge game-winning goal in the Cobbers' OT win over Gustavus which set the stage for the final series of the season.
Concordia's drive to the playoffs coincided with Fitzgerald taking over as the team's starting goalie. He went 7-2-1 down the stretch. He finished with a 2.44 goals against average which was tied for third in the MIAC. He also had a 90.7% save percentage which was No.6 on the league's list.
Lalli's All-Playoff Team award is the second postseason honor of his career. He was named to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team in 2022.
Lalli fought through an injury at the tail end of the season. His presence was felt in the Cobbers' playoff game with St. Olaf where he scored the opening goal of the game, and set up the game-tying goal at the start of the third period.
