NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/22/12)— For the second straight Saturday Concordia battled for 90 minutes against one of the top teams in the MIAC and for the second straight Saturday they fell by a single goal.
The Cobbers conceded the game-winning to No.23-ranked Carleton in the 64th minute and lost 2-1 in Northfield. The loss evens Concordia's overall record at 4-4. The Knights win for the sixth time in their first seven games and improve their overall mark to 6-1. Carleton wins in league play for the first time and is now 1-1.
Carleton got on the board first in the 24th minute. Simon Gonet received a pass 12 yards out from goal and was able to slot the ball into the corner. Concordia then tied the game less than 15 minutes later when Kristian Reiersgord connected on a pass from Michael Forston at the 37:13 mark. For Reiersgord it was his team-leading fourth goal of the year. He now has 10 total points in 2012.
The most dramatic moment of the first 45 minutes cam in the last minute of play when Cobber goalie Peter Runquist stopped a penalty shot. Carleton got the game-winning goal at 63:18 when one of the Knights tracked down a long ball and was able to send a pass into the penalty area. Freshman Branden McGarrity then settled the ball, turned and fired a shot just inside the near post. It was McGarrity's team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Runquist made six saves on the day while Carleton goalie James Nehar turned aside one shot to earn his fourth victory of the season.
The Cobbers will look to put a stop to their two-game losing skid when they host St. Thomas on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
