Second-Half Sorrow Strikes Again
For the second straight game Concordia gave up three goals in the second half and lost at home.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/13/22)---For the second straight game, Concordia was tied 1-1 at halftime. And for the second straight game, the Cobbers conceded three goals in the second half and lost at home.
Concordia allowed a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza, rallied to cut the lead to 3-2 before, then gave up the final insurance goal in the final 11 minutes of play in a 4-2 loss to Macalester in the MIAC opener for both teams.
The Cobbers got on the board first when sophomore Mason Weigel curled a perfectly paced pass to senior Telvin Vah behind the Scot's defense. Vah was able to run past the last defender and get to the ball before the Macalester goalie could challenge the pass. Vah calmly knocked the ball into the vacated ball from 18 yards out to stake CC to a 1-0 lead.
The goal at the 12:17 mark was Vah's second of the season and 22nd of his career. The 22 goals are ninth most in program history.
Macalester (2-2-2, 1-0-0 MIAC) tied the game exactly 11 minutes later on a breakaway from 30 yards out. The Scots' front runner picked off an errant pass and raced untouched into the penalty area before slotting home the equalizer at 23:17.
The game would remain deadlocked at 1-1 until the fourth minute of the second half when Macalester scored off of a throw-in from deep inside the Cobbers' defensive end.
The Scots doubled the lead at 59:50 when an attacker got free in the CC penalty area and headed home a cross from the right win.
Concordia (1-4-0, 0-1-1 MIAC) quickly answered when freshman Gannon Brooks took a precisely weighted ball from Vah and slotted home a shot from 7-yards out. The play started with a throw-in on the left wing from sophomore defender Liam Weiler. Weiler's toss was flicked backwards by a Macalester player which allowed Vah to run on to the ball and get to the end line. He turned the corner just inside the penalty area and then slid a pass through a defender's legs and right to the waiting Brooks.
The strike from Brooks at 62:04 was his team-leading third of the season.
The Scots finished off the scoring by taking advantage of a collision between a pair of Concordia defenders at the 79:30 mark.
The Scots held a 15-11 edge in total shots and a 12-7 mark in shots on goal. Vah, Brooks and Matthew Nemer all had a team-high two shots for CC.
Goalie Erick Torres made eight saves in 90 minutes of play.
UP NEXT: Concordia will have a conference/non-conference road doubleheader this weekend. The Cobbers will play at St. Scholastica on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m., and then travel to Wisconsin to take on Wis.-Eau Claire on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
