MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/05/24)---Concordia and St. Mary's battled each other. They battled the wind. They battled putting the ball on the net. And in the end, they battled to a 0-0 tie.
With 1:08 left in the second half, it appeared that the Cobbers would end their losing streak and come away with a win. Concordia was awarded a penalty kick in the 89th minute of play but the ensuing spot kick was stopped by the Cardinal's goalie ensuring that the game would end in a scoreless draw.
The tie does stop the Cobbers' 9-game losing streak. CC is now 1-9-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the MIAC. St. Mary's also remains winless in conference play. They are 5-5-1 in all games and 0-3-1 in the league.
The game was played with a fierce side-to-side wind that gusted up to 30mph at times. The crosswind affected each team's ability to control the ball and gain quality scoring chances.
Both teams had a few mini-breakaways from the wings during the game that were either turned aside or sailed high of the target.
Besides the penalty kick, Concordia's closest chance came at the end of the first half when they were awarded a free kick just inside the half line. Cobber goalie Jensen Waltz came forward to take the dead ball and his shot got caught up in the wind, sailed over the SMU goalie's head and hit the crossbar.
Concordia held a 12-8 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
Gannon Brooks, Parker Gast and Gavin Groshelle all had a team-high two shots in the game.
Waltz finished the 90 minutes by making three saves. The shutout was his second of the season and third career blanking.
Concordia will have a week before its next game when they face Augsburg in Minneapolis on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
