Cobbers Host Annual Senior Celebration Game
Concordia honored its nine seniors before the annual Senior Celebration Game against Wis.-Stout and finished their home season with a 1-1 tie.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/26/24)---Concordia honored its nine seniors before the annual Senior Celebration Game against Wis.-Stout and finished their home season with a 1-1 tie.
The Blue Devils scored the only goal of the first half and the Cobbers countered with a Seth Kotzbacher goal in the second period to finish with the 1-1 draw.
The tie is Concordia's third in its last six games, while Stout records its first tie score of the season.
The Cobbers held the majority of the possession in the first half and had several quality chances but couldn't get on the board.
The best opportunity for Concordia came right before the Blue Devils scored the opening goal of the game. CC had a dead ball from just on top of the penalty area on the right wing and the service was headed by Gannon Brooks. Brook's header glanced off a Stout defender and went right to Kotzbacher who was inside the 6-yard box outside the far post. Kotzbacher's 1-time shot hit the far post and caromed back into the middle of the goal area. Senior Mason Weninger hit the rebound on goal but it was cleared off the line by a Blue Devils' player.
Stout scored their lone goal of the game less than 2 minutes later off of a throw-in and finish.
Kotzbacher came up with the equalizer on a second chance after a dead ball deep in the Stout defensive end of the field. The initial cross from the free kick was cleared back to freshman Parker Gast, who lofted a cross into the penalty area. Kotzbacher was able to get above the defense and head the ball in an arc that went over the Stout goalie and under the crossbar.
The goal at 52:51 was Kotzbacher's first of the season and third of his career.
Concordia would have multiple opportunities to claim the game-winner but were denied by the post or the UWS goalie.
The Cobbers held a decisive 19-6 advantage in total shots and a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Weninger led all players with four total shots and Kotzbacher had a team-high three shots on frame.
Jensen Waltz had four saves for CC and almost came up with the game-winning goal from his own penalty area. He punted the ball and it sailed into the wind, bounced at the top of the Stout penalty area and over the goalie. Unfortunately for Waltz, the keeper was able to get back to the goal and tip the ball over the bar.
Concordia will finish off the 2024 season when they play at St. Olaf on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
