A Sweep To Start TripleHeader Weekend
Concordia started their tripleheader weekend by sweeping Northwestern (Minn.) 9-0.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/07/17)---Concordia started their non-conference/conference/conference weekend tripleheader by sweeping Northwestern (Minn.) 9-0.
The Cobbers won all six singles bouts in straight sets to up their season record to 4-8 on the season. The Eagles fall to 6-12 for the year.
Concordia's attention to doubles play throughout the season paid off against Northwestern as they were able to seize the momentum from the start and carry it over into singles play.
The Cobbers' No.2 and No.3 doubles teams rolled to wins in their matches. Erik Porter and David Schneck cruised to an 8-2 win at No.2 and then Matthew Engum and Jesse Schneeberger won 8-3 at No.3 doubles.
Both the No.2 and No.3 Concordia doubles teams have four wins on the season.
The most dramatic match of the entire afternoon came at No.1 doubles where Isaac Toivonen and David Youngs were able to get a break in extra sets and come away with a 9-7 win. The victory is the seventh straight for the tandem of Toivonen and Youngs. They are now 8-4 on the year with all eight wins coming at the No.1 doubles spot.
The singles play was colored maroon and gold as Concordia won all six matches in straight sets. Toivonen won his match at No.1 singles 6-0, 6-2. Youngs followed suit by only losing two games and won 6-2, 6-0 at No.2 singles.
Porter claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win at No.3 singles bout in the closest singles clash of the team match. Schneck won 6-1, 6-4 at No.4 singles.
Head coach Joseph Murrey switched things up at No.5 and No.6 singles. He inserted a pair of freshmen into the lineup and they both won in convincing fashion. Jared Saue earned a 6-0, 6-1 at No.5 singles and then Tate Hovland won his second collegiate singles match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No.6 singles.
HIGH FIVE: To go along with his seventh straight doubles win Isaac Toivonen won his fifth straight singles match. He is now 9-3 on the year and one win away from becoming the first Cobber player to post a double-digit singles win total since 2011 when Matt Edin went 14-3.
DOUBLES DOINGS: Concordia's attention to doubles play has turned into 18 double wins this season. That is an average of 1.5 doubles wins per match. That is compared to last season when they only won eight doubles matches last year. The last time that CC had more than 15 doubles wins in a season was in 2011 and they went 31-20 in doubles play.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will stay in the Twin Cities and square off against conference opponent Hamline on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 10 a.m. at Holt Courts. CC will then play at St. Olaf on Sunday, Apr. 9 at 12 p.m.
