Reversal Of Storylines Leads To Quarterfinal Defeat
It was a reversal of recent storylines for Concordia in its MIAC quarterfinal match-up at St. Olaf. The Cobbers held the advantage in doubles play against the Oles but lost five of the six singles bouts and fell 4-2.
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/29/25)---It was a reversal of recent storylines for Concordia in its MIAC quarterfinal match-up at St. Olaf. The Cobbers held the advantage in doubles play against the Oles but lost five of the six singles bouts and fell 4-2.
It was the first playoff match for the Cobbers since 2018, and they end their season with a 7-10 overall record. St. Olaf advances to the semifinals of the conference tournament, where they will face No.1 seed Gustavus. The Oles are 7-7 on the year and have won two straight matches.
Concordia took a huge burst of momentum into singles play after tallying in two of the three doubles bouts to earn the lone team point for doubles play.
The No.1 doubles team of Ryoga Yano and Isaac Maddock trailed 4-2, but proceeded to rattle off four straight game wins to post the 6-4 victory.
Yano and Maddock finish their season with a 7-5 record in doubles play. The seven wins are the most by any CC doubles tandem since 2020 when Jared Saue and Erik Porter went 8-4.
Kai Pierce and Daniel Skrade dug themselves an identical 4-2 hole at No.3 doubles and were able to win four straight games to earn CC the team point for doubles.
It was the fifth win of the season for Pierce and Skrade, who were second on the team in doubles victories.
The lone singles win for the Cobbers came from the racket of Maddock playing at No.2 singles. He won the first set 7-5 after the two players traded sets to get the match to 5-5 after the score was tied at 3-3. Maddock was able to get the key break of serve to earn the 7-5 win. He carried that momentum into the second set where he won five unanswered games after it was 1-1 to post the 6-1 victory.
Maddock ends his sophomore season with seven singles wins.
Logan Sandberg and Hunter Rice both took their singles matches into a third set but couldn't come up with key points and lost.
Sanberg fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at No.3 singles, while Rice lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at No.6 singles.
