Olson Breaks His Own School Record

FARGO, N.D. (2/09/13)—Erik Olson wasted little time in rewriting the record books in the pole vault. Two weeks after breaking the 30-year-old record by clearing 15-feet, Olson went over 15-00.25 to lead Concordia at the Bison Open on Saturday.

Olson cleared 15-05.25 on his second attempt at the height and finished in seventh place. The top 6 place winners were all Division I athletes. Olson's mark also ties for the second best in the MIAC this season.

The drama of the pole vault was almost sent into orbit when less than 30 minutes later teammate Levi Bachmeier had three tries to tie Olson's record but came up just inches short each time. On his best attempt he cleared the bar but then came back down on top of the bar and snapped it in half. Bachmeier finished with a height of 14-06.25 which was good for 10th place.

Once again the field athletes led the way at the Bison Open. Besides the top 8 finish from Olson in the pole vault, freshman Brandon Zylstra continued his stellar first collegiate season by placing seventh in the high jump and 10^th in the long jump. Zylstra cleared 6-02.75 in the high jump and went 20-09.25 in the long jump. His mark in the long jump is a season best and pushes him into the top 6 in the conference.

Scott Anderson recorded the top finish from a track athlete. Anderson ran a 2:38.42 in the small field in the 1000 meters and placed third. That time is a season best and in the top 16 of the conference.

Logan Carlson and Ben Vickstrom turned in the other top 15 track finishes for CC. Carlson was 13^th in the 400 meters with a final time of 53.33 and Vickstrom was 15^th in the 60 meters at 7.27. Vickstrom's time is a season best and the third fastest in school history. It also ties for the 14^th fastest time in the MIAC this season.

Concordia will now head to Collegeville to compete in the St. John's Quadrangular on Saturday, Feb. 16 starting at 11:30 a.m.
