Vickstrom Speeds, Olson Soars At MIAC Outdoor Meet
Cobber sophomore Ben Vickstrom continued his breakout season by finishing in the top 5 in the 100 and 200 meters at the MIAC Meet and helped CC place eighth.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/11/13)—Watch for a remake of "Fast and Furious 6" coming to a track in the spring of 2014. Cobber sophomore Ben Vickstrom has gone from unknown to major player in a span of a few weeks and used the 2013 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Meet as a coming out party.
Vickstrom posted top 5 finishes in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and helped Concordia place eighth as a team at the annual conference track meet. Fresh off his MIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors, Vickstrom ran a 22.30 in the finals of the 200 meters and finished in fourth place. He also clocked a 11.11 in the 100 meters and placed fifth.
While Vickstrom was speeding down the track, senior Erik Olson was soaring in the pole vault competition. Olson broke the indoor pole vault record earlier this season but had failed to duplicate that success so far in the outdoor season. He answered all the questions at the conference by clearing 15-05.50 and finished in second place. His height also set a new Cobber school record and makes him the undisputed King of Cobber pole vault.
The pole vault was the best event of the meet for Concordia as they placed three athletes inside the top 7. Olson's second-place finish was ahead of Levi Bachmeier who was sixth with a height of 14-09.50 and Connor Baker who was seventh at 14-01.75.
A trio of Cobber track athletes came away with seventh-place finishes at the meet. Brad McConn raced to a 4:14.01 in the 1500 meters while Ryan Sederquist came away with a 32:25.15 in the 10,000 meters and freshman Noah Dovre was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.13.
Connor Johnson earned his second straight top 5 finish in the javelin. After winning the event at last year's conference meet, Johnson had a toss of 172-11.00 and claimed fifth place. Simon Erlandson and Antonio Burks had the other top finishes for the CC field athletes. Erlandson cleared 6-05.50 and was seventh in the high jump and Burks, who was competing in his first MIAC Outdoor Meet, unleashed a toss of 45-04.50 in the shot put and was also seventh. His toss was almost two inches farther thn his previous season best.
