Track Athletes Lead At 2-Site Weekend

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (4/29/17)---Concordia's sprint medley relay team nearly pulled off the race of the year for the Cobbers at the Drake Relays as CC moved one week closer to the conference meet.

The quartet of Willie Julkes III, Luke Lillehaugen, David Supinski and Matthew Lillehaugen ran a 3:31.68 in a race that features a pair of 200-meter legs followed by a 400 meter stint before finishing with an 800-meter leg. 

The Cobber crew finished eighth in the event at the Drake Relays and their time was a mere .27 of a second off the school record set in 2010. 

Concordia also had a group participate in the 4x800-meter relay at Drake. Supinski and the two Lillehaugens added Nick Solheim and crossed the line in 8:00.68. That mark is No.14 on the school's all-time list. 

The majority of the Cobbers headed west to compete in the Al Cassell Relays at the University of Jamestown on Saturday. Concordia had a trio of athletes post marks in the Top 15 of the MIAC this season. 

The distance tandem of Brandon Quibell and Eric Wicklund went 1-2 in the 10K and both had marks in the Top 15 of the MIAC. Quibell crossed the line in 34:49.80 to win the race. His time is No.13 in the conference this year. Wicklund was right behind Quibell and finished with a mark of 35:16.22. He is now in the No.14 spot in the MIAC.

Cobber teammate Brendan Johnson made it a 1-2-3 finish with a time of 37:08.78. 

Junior field athlete Adam Frazier had the other MIAC Top 15 mark. He placed fifth in the shot put with a season-best distance of 45-05.75. That mark is the second farthest by a CC athlete this season and No.11 in the conference this season. 

Frazier was just ahead of Alec Boike who was sixth with a distance of 44-09.75. 

Sophomore Jacob Probst had the other Top 6 field finish for CC at Jamestown. He placed sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 40-01.25. That distance is just under his season best of 40-03.50. 

Sprinters Matthew Backer and Tom Whiting had Top 5 finishes in track events. The two went 4-5 in the 100-meter dash and both had season-best times. Backer was fourth at 11.60 and Whiting was fifth at 11.65.           
  
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will start the conference meet next weekend when the multi-even athletes compete in the MIAC decathlon at Carleton on May 4-5. The Cobber team will stay at home and hope to post more conference-qualifying marks at the Ron Masanz Invite hosted by MSU Moorhead on Saturday, May 6.
