A Quintet Of Top 6 Finishes On Day 2
Concordia used five Top 6 finishes on Day 2 of the MIAC Meet to finish in eighth place.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/13/17)---Concordia used five Top 6 finishes on Day 2 of the MIAC Championship Meet to jump to 50 total teams points and place eighth for the second straight season.
The 50 team points is three more than last season and the most since 2015 when they finished fifth with 83 points.
The Cobbers had all four of their track finalists earn spots on the podium. The top event for Concordia on Day 2 was the 110-meter hurdles where freshmen Willie Julkes III and Matt Bye both placed in the Top 6 and earned nine team points.
Julkes ran a 15.49 in the finals and came home in third place. His time was a season best and the 15th fastest in school history. It is the fastest time clocked by a CC athlete since 2012. Bye was only .06 behind Julkes time and finished in sixth place. His time in the finals was also a season best.
Senior Matthew Lillehaugen had the top individual performance of the day. He became the first Cobber athlete since 2011 to run a sub-3:59.00 in the 1500 meters. Lillehaugen recorded a personal best time of 3:58.48 which was good for a fourth-place finish in a very talented field. His time is the seventh fastest in school history and quickest since the 2000 season.
Sophomore David Supinski was the fourth Cobber track athlete to earn team points on Day 2. He was just off the school record in the prelims of the 400 meters on Friday but then missed that mark by a mere .01 of a second in the finals and came home in sixth place. He ended up with a finals time of 48.82 which was almost as fast as the 48.81 he ran in the prelims.
Supinski has now earned MIAC All-Conference or All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in three of the four MIAC meets he has competed.
Concordia's final Top 6 finish of the day came from junior Eli Beachy in the pole vault. Beachy cleared his opening two heights of 14-04.50 and 14-10.25 without a miss. He then moved to 15-02.25 where he barely missed on his first two tries but then came through in clutch and cleared the bar on his third, and final, attempt. Beachy had three goes at a school-record height of 15-06.25 but couldn't convert.
His finishing height of 15-02.25 earned him a fourth-place finish and is a person best and the third highest in school history.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will now send several athletes east to try and put up NCAA qualifying marks in a pair of national qualifying meets. The Cobber multi-event athletes will compete in the North Central Decathlon in Naperville, Ill. On May 16-17 while other athletes will head to Wis.-La Crosse to participate in the Wis.-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier on May 18.
