Rhonemus Posts Season-Best Decathlon Score At St. Olaf

LA CROSSE, Wis. (5/19/22)---A pair of Cobber All-American seniors proved how much 1.25 seconds can mean when it comes to track events at the final qualifier events. One senior broke his own school record by less than 1.25 seconds, while a second missed breaking a 42-year-old record.

Cal Wright bettered his own school record in the 400 meters at the Wis.-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier Meet. He clocked a 47.56 which was .12 of a second faster than his school-record mark he posted at the MIAC Championship Meet last weekend.

Wright's time keeps him in the Top 15 in Division III and assures him of qualifying for the NCAA National Outdoor Meet as he tries to earn back-to-back All-American honors in the 400 meters.  

Munir Isahak was on the other end of the spectrum as he clocked a 14:40.33 in the 5000 meters. That time was only 1.25 seconds behind the school record of 14:39.08 which was set in 1980.

Isahak ends his Cobber career by holding six school records. He holds the school record in the indoor mile, 3000 meters, 5000 meters and is a part of the record-breaking distance medley relay team. In outdoor track, he owns program records in the 1500 meters and 10K.

Isahak will go down in the record books as the greatest distance runner in school history.   

Concordia had four other individuals, and a relay, compete at La Crosse. Dawson Shaffer ran a 22.63 in the 200 and a 52.44 in the 400. Trevor Tiongson and Simon Zahrbock also ran in the 400. Tiongson clocked a 49.74 and Zahrback came home in 51.72. Anthony Marsh, the MIAC champion in the long jump, competed in the high jump and cleared a height of 6-02.75.

Wright was joined by Hayden Gagnon, Colin Schuller and Tommy Kern for the 4x400 relay. The squad had to wait until after midnight to compete and then ran a 3:24.19.

Junior Wade Rhonemus competed in the St. Olaf Multi-Event in order to try and up his score in the decathlon. Rhonemus was able to improve on his score from the MIAC decathlon by 326 points, but it wasn't enough to get him into nationals.

Rhonemus finished with a score of 5,734 points which is a season-best score.
