Rhonemus & Folkestad Complete Day 1 At NCAA Meet
Wade Rhonemus and Cooper Folkestad finished off Day 1 at the NCAA Outdoor Championship Meet at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (5/23/24)—Wade Rhonemus and Cooper Folkestad finished off Day 1 at the NCAA Outdoor Championship Meet at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Rhonemus completed the first five events in the decathlon while Folkestad competed in the discus.
Rhonemus used a pair of personal-best marks to finish in 15th place out of the 22 competitors. Rhonemus, who is stronger in the events on Day 2 of the decathlon, ended Thursday with 3,375 points. That total is 70 points out of the Top 11. His 3,375 points is also 58 points ahead of his first-day total at the St. Olaf Last Chance Qualifier Meet where he ended up posting a PR with a total of 6,440 points.
Rhonemus' top two events on Day 1 came in the long jump and high jump where he posted PR marks. Rhonemus flew to a distance of 22-01 in the long jump which bettered his old PR of 21-04.25. His distance was also the third best among all the athletes in the competition. Rhonemus tied his PR in the high jump by clearing 6-0.75.
The long jump and 100-meter dash were Rhonemus' top-scoring events. He scored 750 points in both events. His other 700-plus point events came in the final event of the day where he ran a 52.23 and recorded 715 points.
Rhonemus will finish off the decathlon with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters. The five events start at 11 a.m. (CDT) with the hurdles.
Folkestad competed in the discus – the first of his two events at the meet – on Day 1 of the national meet. He failed to qualify for the finals of the event and finished in 20th place. His best distance of his three prelim throws came on attempt No.2 where he posted a mark of 141-03.
Folkestad will participate in the stronger of his two events, the shot put, on Friday, May 24. The prelims are slated to start at 12:30 p.m. (CDT).
