Opener Is A Sign Of Good Things To Come
Concordia kicked off the 2014 season by steadily improving and showed signs of good things to come in a pair of losses to Northwood (Fla.).

COCOA BEACH, Fla. (2/27/14)—Concordia started the 2014 season by steadily improving in their doubleheader with Northwood (Fla.) on Thursday. The Cobbers lost 8-0 and 5-2 to the Seahawks but showed signs of good things to come by the end of the twinbill.
It was the first two games for Concordia who will play 10 contests in Florida on their annual spring break trip. Northwood entered the day having already played 15 games on the season and is now 6-11 on the year.
The Cobbers dropped the opener 8-0 in five innings. Concordia's nemesis in the first game was a pair of multiple-run innings midway through the game. CC gave up four runs in the third and then three in the fourth.
Concordia's defense provided the lone highlight of the first game. Playing outside for the first time in 2014, the Cobbers committed only one error. Freshman first baseman Dominique Giesen led the infield by collecting four putouts and getting an assist.
Hilary Rotunda was in the circle for the first game and gave up seven earned runs but struck out six in five innings.
The second game started in the same fashion as the first but then the Cobbers started to make contact and came up with a two-run, two-hit third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Mackenzie Jensen started the frame by reaching on an error and then stealing second base. Freshman Madison Little then singled and stole second with Jensen scoring on the double steal. Paige Beseman then singled to left center to score Little. CC had a chance to come up with an even bigger number but stranded two runners with only one out.
Northwood won the game by scoring four runs on four hits in the fourth inning.
The Cobbers had five players collect one hit. Giesen and Heather Jonasson had the other base knocks in addition to the third-inning trio of Jensen, Little and Beseman.
JoAnna Carlson pitched the entire second game and gave up four earned runs on nine hits and struck out two.
The Cobbers will face Lyndon State and Alma on Friday, Feb. 28 beginning at 10 a.m.
