Cobbers Serve Up Sweep Two Different Ways
Concordia used pitching and defense to win the first game of their doubleheader at Minn.-Morris and came back with an offensive showcase in Game 2 to complete the sweep.
MORRIS, Minn. (3/31/25)---You want a win with pitching and defense? Concordia can deliver that. You want offense and a double-digit run total? The Cobbers can do that too.
Concordia got another pitching gem from Bayleigh Frye in the first game of its doubleheader at Minn.-Morris and won 2-0. They finished off the sweep over the Cougars by scoring 13 runs on 18 hits in a 13-11 win.
The two wins run the Cobbers' win streak to seven games. That's the longest win streak since Concordia fashioned an 8-game string in 2016.
Concordia is now 12-4 on the season. Morris loses for the fifth straight game and falls to 8-16 on the year.
Game 1: Concordia 2, Minn.-Morris 0
The Cobbers scored the only run they would need in the opener in the first inning. Lily Heskin laid down a bunt for a 1-out single and then came all around to score when the third baseman threw the ball into right field.
Frye would make that one run stand up as she cruised to her sixth win of the season. She didn't allow a runner to get past second base, gave up only four hits – all singles – in the 7.0 innings and struck out five.
Emma Bowman gave Frye an insurance run when she led off the fifth inning with a double, advanced to third base on a passed ball and then scored on a second passed ball.
The Cobbers finished the opener with six hits. First-year designated player Brooklyn Hofer led all players with a pair of hits. She was 2-for-3 with both hits showing up in the double column.
Heskin and Bowman both scored a run and both were a part of a group of four players that had a single hit. Kailee Falconer and Reese Hauck came through with the other hits.
Game 2: Concordia 13, Minn.-Morris 11
The Cobbers trailed 7-3 heading into the top of the fifth inning and responded by scoring 10 consecutive runs to grab a 13-7 lead. CC posted five runs on eight hits in the fifth frame and duplicated that run total in the sixth when they plated five more runs on four hits.
Concordia finished Game 2 with 18 hits and had six players, including the Top 4 in the other, record multiple-hit games.
The "H" crew of Heskin, Hauck and Hofer combined eight hits, five runs scored and five RBI. Heskin was 3-for-5 in the No.2 spot and scored two runs. Hauck was 2-for-4 with three RBI at No.3 and Hofer went 3-for-5 with two runs scored from the clean-up spot.
Falconer, Megan Guggisberg and Cate Kehoe had the other multiple-hit games for CC in the finale. For Kehoe, it was the first multi-hit game of her college career.
Kegen Coulson and Lauren Staples split the pitching duties. Coulson started in the circle and went 3.1 innings. Staples entered in the fourth inning, closed out the final 3.2 innings and picked up her third win of the year.
Concordia is scheduled to host the home opener on Thursday, Apr. 3 against Gustavus.
