ST. PETER, Minn. (4/04/25)---Concordia had its 7-game win streak come to an end as they dropped a pair of games against Gustavus in the MIAC opener for both teams.
The Cobbers couldn't come up with a key hit in Game 1 and fell 1-0 and were outscored 8-5 in the finale of the doubleheader that was originally scheduled to be played in Moorhead but was moved because of the cold and snowy weather.
Concordia is now 12-6 on the year, while the Gusties win for the fourth straight game and are 12-8 on the season.
Game 1: Concordia 0, Gustavus 2
The statistics were nearly identical in the opener as each team had five hits, but the difference came at the plate with runners in scoring position. Gustavus had a pair of hits in RBI opportunity situations, while the Cobbers went 0-for-7.
The Gusties scored the opening run of the game in the first inning on a leadoff double, single and then a ground ball out to second base.
The insurance run in the game came in the top of the seventh after another leadoff hit that was followed by a sacrifice, a single and then a squeeze play.
Concordia's best chance to score came in the fifth inning when Emma Bowman led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from the bat of Kate Gulbranson. Unfortunately, a pair of ground outs to the shortstop ended the inning before CC could plate the tying run.
Danielle Lyon had the only 2-hit game in the opener. Bowman, Jocelyn Maki and Corra Utash had the other base knocks for CC.
Bayleigh Frye got her eighth start of the season and went the full 7.0 innings. She allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out five.
Game 2: Concordia 5, Gustavus 8
The Cobbers fell behind early and rallied late but came up three runs shy in Game 2. Gustavus scored two runs in the first and four more in the second to push Concordia into a 6-0 hole.
Concordia countered with a pair of runs in the fourth and three in the bottom of the seventh.
The big hit for CC in the fourth was a double from Charlotte Bertram that brought home Lyon and Morgan Guggisberg.
Cate Kehoe, Kailee Falconer and Reese Hauck all had RBI singles in the seventh as CC cut the lead to 8-5 and had the bases loaded with one out before a pop up and fly out to center field ended the game.
Concordia put up nine hits in the finale. Brooklyn Hofer led all players with three hits. She was 3-for-4 with a double from the No.4 spot in the Cobber order.
Bertram had the other multiple-hit game. She was 2-for-3 and drove in two of the team's five runs.
Danica Rath started the game and went the first 2.0 innings. Lauren Staples came on in the third frame and finished the final 5.0 innings. She allowed two earned runs and struck out one.
Concordia is scheduled to play at St. Benedict on Tuesday, Apr. 8, before returning home to host their home opener on Thursday, Apr. 10 against Macalester.
