Frye Helps Cobbers Gain A Split At St. Benedict
First-year pitcher Bayleigh Frye pitched a complete-game shutout in the first game of the Cobbers' DH at St. Benedict and helped Concordia post a split against the Bennies.
ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (4/08/25)---Concordia scored one run in its doubleheader at St. Benedict, but it was enough to gain a split as they rode the right arm of first-year pitcher Bayleigh Frye to post a 1-0 shutout win in the opener before falling 7-0 in the second game.
The win in the opener was the first conference victory for the Cobbers since Apr. 10, 2023.
Concordia is now 13-7 in 2025 and 1-3 in MIAC contests. The Bennies win for the fifth time in the last six games and move to 11-9 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Frye continued her stellar pitching this season. She hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of her nine games this year and has only given up two total runs in her last four games. Frye owes her success in the circle to not allowing opposing batters to make solid contact on the ball. She has only struck out 47 batters in 61.0 innings pitched but hasn't allowed a home run and has only conceded eight total extra-base hits.
Frye's 7.0 innings of scoreless work on Tuesday dropped her season earned run average to 0.80. She currently leads the MIAC in ERA, and her four shutouts on the year are tied for most by a conference pitcher. Opposing hitters are batting .214 against Frye, which is the second-lowest mark in the MIAC.
Game 1: Concordia 1, St. Benedict 0
The Cobbers were able to punch across their only run of the day in the sixth inning of Game 1.
The game-winning run came courtesy of a pair of errors by the CSB infield. Cate Kehoe led off the inning by getting on base from an error by the third baseman. She was erased on a fielder's choice ground ball in the next at-bat. Kailee Falconer was safe at first on the play and stole second. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lily Heskin and came home on a booted ground ball off the bat of Reese Hauck.
Concordia had two hits in Game 1. Megan Guggisberg broke up the no-hitter with a bunt single in the fifth, and Danielle Lyon singled to right field to open the seventh frame.
Frye held the Bennies in check for all 7.0 innings. She allowed eight hits but didn't give up an extra-base knock, and St. Benedict never had more than two hits in a single frame.
St. Benedict's best chances to score came in the first and sixth innings, and both times they had a runner thrown out at home plate.
Heskin gunned down the CSB runner from left field in the first and Hauck kept the slate clean when she nailed a runner from center field in the sixth.
Game 2: Concordia 0, St. Benedict 7
The Cobbers produced more hits in the second game but were done in by a couple of crooked-number innings by the Bennies in the fourth and fifth frames.
Concordia had five hits in the finale but only had runners advance past third base in the seventh inning as they went 1-for-10 with runners on base.
Falconer, Heskin, Hauck, Lyon and Bailey Plante all had single hits for CC in the game. Lyon was the only Cobber player to have a hit in both games and finished the day by going 2-for-6. She has hit safely in six of the last eight games for CC.
Junior Mallory Leitner got her third start of the season in the circle. She went 4.0 innings and allowed three earned runs and struck out a pair. Lauren Staples finished the final 2.0 innings and also gave up three earned runs and fanned two.
Concordia will finally get the chance to host its 2025 home opener. The Cobbers will face Macalester on Thursday, Apr. 10 at 3:30 p.m.
