MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/10/25)---Cue Queen and the song "Another One Bites The Dust."
On Tuesday, Concordia put an extended winless streak in conference play to bed, and on Thursday, they killed off another losing skid.
The Cobbers used the MIAC-leading fifth shutout of the season from Bayleigh Frye and home runs off the bats of Reese Hauck and Danielle Lyon to claim a 4-0 win in the home opener of the 2025 season. It was their first victory at home since the final series of the 2021 season when CC swept St. Mary's. The streak had reached 28 games before the first game against Macalester.
The second game didn't follow suit for Concordia as the Scots scored twice in the first and six times in the second en route to an 8-0 scoreline.
The split pushes the Cobbers' overall record to 14-8 on the season. CC is 2-4 against league opponents. Macalester moves to 16-8 in all games and 3-3 in the MIAC.
Game 1: Concordia 4, Macalester 0
The opener was a 0-0 pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fourth when the Cobbers plated all four of their runs in the game. Hauck led off the frame with her team-leading third long ball of the year when she turned on a pitch and sent it over the left-center field fence.
First-year designated player Brooklyn Hofer laced a single up the middle in the very next at-bat and Lyon followed with a laser over the right-center field fence. The HR was Lyon's first of the season and third of her career.
Concordia capped the scoring when Jocelyn Maki singled to left-center field. Senior Rosie Unglaub came on as a pinch runner and stole second base and advanced to third on a dropped third strike on the next batter. Senior Emma Bowman followed with a perfect bunt that allowed Unglaub to score on the squeeze play and Bowman to reach first safely.
Frye retired nine of the first 11 batters she faced in the game and got out of the only jam she faced in the sixth when Macalester put runners on second and third with no one out but Frye was able to induce a weak pop fly to the infield and then struck out the final two batters in the inning.
Frye finished the game by allowing six hits and tied her season-high mark in strikeouts with nine.
Game 2: Concordia 0, Macalester 8
The Cobbers were never able to get any momentum in the finale as the Scots bolted out of the gate for a pair of runs in the first and added six more in the second.
Concordia's best chance to score came in the third when Bowman led off with a single to center but was erased on a fielder's choice ground ball. The same scenario played out in the next at-bat, and Kailee Falconer found herself on first base. She stole second but was stranded there after a 2-out strikeout.
The Cobbers had three hits in Game 2. Hofer, Lyon and Bowman all reached safely to record hits in both games.
Mallory Leitner started the game in the circle, with Lauren Staples coming on in the second. Staples pitched 3.2 innings, didn't allow an earned run and gave up only two hits.
Stat Stuff: Frye dropped her league-leading ERA to 0.72…she also leads the MIAC in shutouts (5) and opponent's batting average (.218)…Hofer leads the Cobbers in hitting, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. She has a .429 batting average, a .435 on-base mark and is slugging .667. She also has a team-best eight multiple-hit games…Lyon and Hauck are tied for the team lead in RBI with 13. Lyon has now reached safely in seven straight games.
Concordia will stay at home when they host Hamline on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 1 p.m.
