Fourth Verse Same As The First
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/13/25)---The week started with a split. The week ended with a split. And there were two more splits in between.
Concordia used the same storyline on Sunday as they had on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday as they took the first game in a conference doubleheader and then fell in the second contest.
Sunday's latest chapter featured a 5-0 win over Augsburg in Game 1 and then a wild 14-6 loss in the second game.
The fourth win/loss doubleheader keeps the Cobbers in the hunt for a playoff berth. Concordia is 4-6 in league games and tied for seventh place in the race for the six conference playoff spots. CC is 16-10 in all games.
Augsburg remains tied with the Cobbers at 4-6 in the MIAC and moves to 13-15 overall.
Game 1: Concordia 5, Augsburg 0
Sophomore pitcher Bayleigh Frye took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of the opener. She retired 12 of the first 15 batters she faced before giving up a leadoff single in the fifth. Frye finished the game by retiring nine of the final 10 hitters in the game.
Frye only allowed three hits in the opener and struck out nine for the second time in the last three games.
The 7.0 innings of shutout ball lowered Frye's season ERA to 0.77 which leads the MIAC. She also has a 0.80 ERA mark in conference play. The win upped Frye's season total to 10-2. She is the first 10-game winner for the Cobbers since Megan Gavin won 10 games in 2021.
The Cobbers lit up the scoreboard in the second, third and fourth innings as they scored five runs on five hits.
Cate Kehoe came through with a clutch 2-out single up the middle that scored the two runs in the second inning.
Brooklyn Hofer belted a ball into right center to bring home Reese Hauck from third base in the third inning.
A pair of doubles drove in the two runs in the fourth. Senior Emma Bowman laced a ball down the right field line that scored Kehoe and Kailee Falconer followed with a ball that hit the bottom of the center-field fence.
Game 2: Concordia 6, Augsburg 14
The Cobbers fell behind 9-0 in the finale and got to within 10-6 before the Auggies closed out the game with four unanswered runs in a contest that saw 28 combined hits.
Concordia recorded their second 10-hit game of conference play in Game 2. Lily Heskin led the CC offense. She went 3-for-3 and scored a run from the No.3 spot in the order.
Falconer was the other Cobber with more than one hit in the game. She was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Kegen Coulson, Lauren Staples and Mallory Leitner shared the pitching duties. Staples went the farthest as she came on in the second and pitched 3.2 innings.
The Cobbers will hit the road for their next league doubleheader. CC will play at league-leading St. Mary's on Wednesday, Apr. 16 at 3:30.
