A Senior Day Celebration Split For The Cobbers
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/26/25)---It was the annual Senior Celebration Day for the Cobbers, who honored their six seniors between games of their final home doubleheader of the season against St. Catherine.
Concordia was up to its old split ways as it took the opener 4-0 but then lost 8-0 in Game 2 against the Wildcats.
The win in the first game gave the Cobbers their 20th win of the season. It is only the fifth time in program history that Concordia has won at least 20 games in a single season. CC is now 20-14 in all games and 8-10 in league play.
St. Catherine goes to 18-22 in all games and 10-12 in the MIAC.
Game 1: Concordia 4, St. Catherine 0
Sophomore pitcher Bayleigh Frye posted her eighth shutout of the season in Game 1. The blanking on Saturday continues to add to her school-record total. The previous shutout mark was held by Hall of Famer Erin Gunderson, who had five shutouts in 2000.
Frye worked out of a jam in the very first inning when St. Kate's had a runner on third with no one out. She was able to get an infield pop fly, strikeout and a fly ball to center field to end the inning and keep the score locked at 0-0.
Frye didn't allow a batter to get past second base for the remainder of the game and gave up five total hits in the seven innings. She finished with 11 strikeouts, which is the second time in her last four starts she has posted 11 Ks for the game.
The Cobbers were economical on the base paths in Game 1. They only had four hits, but also had five walks. CC put their leadoff hitter on base in four of the six innings they batted which put pressure on the SCU defense all game.
Megan Guggisberg had the only extra-base hit of the game for Concordia. She had a 2-out double in the first frame that brought home Brooklyn Hofer, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
Concordia opened the game up in the fourth by scoring two runs on one hit. The big play of the inning came with the bases loaded. Senior Rosie Unglaub hit a ball to shortstop. The Wildcat shortstop had to go to the ground to grab the ball and reached out to touch second base to get the force out. The play took long enough for Hofer to score from third and for Kyla Abrahamson to come all the way home from second base.
The Cobbers capped the scoring in the opener with a single run in the sixth. CC was aided by two walks and plated the run on an Emma Bowman sacrifice fly to right field.
Game 2: Concordia 0, St. Catherine 8
It was one of those games for the Cobbers in the finale. Every ball they put in play found a St. Catherine defender, and the Wildcats' defense was able to make several quality plays to keep CC off the base paths.
Concordia had three hits in Game 2 and was never able to get a runner past second base. Unglaub, Jocelyn Maki and Lily Heskin had the hits for the Cobbers and all were singles.
Senior Lauren Staples started the game in the circle and pitched into the third inning. First-year pitcher Kegen Coulson went the final 4.0 innings and allowed one earned run and six hits.
The Cobbers will finish off their home and away MIAC weekend when they play at Carleton on Sunday, Apr. 27 at 1 p.m.
