Cobbers Drop Two Close Calls At Carleton
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (4/27/25)---Concordia dropped a pair of close games at Carleton in the penultimate series of the regular season.
The Cobbers lost 3-1 in the opener and 5-4 in Game two in a doubleheader where Concordia outhit the Knights, but the two contests were decided by a total of three runs.
The two losses drop the Cobbers to 20-16 in all games and 8-12 in the MIAC. CC is now in eighth place in the conference standings.
Game 1: Concordia 1, Carleton 3
The Cobbers had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, and then Carleton was able to scratch across single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to earn the 3-1 win.
Concordia had six hits in the opener but didn't have an extra-base knock and only had one walk in the game. The Knights posted eight hits with two extra-base hits and two walks.
Concordia's lone run in the game came in the top of the second inning. Danielle Lyon coaxed a 1-out walk and Kyla Abrahamson came on for Lyon as a pinch runner. A ground ball out sent Abrahamson to second. She was able to steal third base and came home when Megan Guggisberg came up with a clutch 2-out single. It would be the only base hit with runners in scoring position for CC in Game 1.
The Cobbers' best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when Reese Hauck and Brooklyn Hofer led off with singles. They advanced to second and third with one out, but a fielder's choice ground ball and a pop out to shortstop ended the rally.
Hauck and Lily Heskin both had 2-hit games and combined for four of the six hits in the opener.
Sophomore Bayleigh Frye pitched 6.0 innings, allowed the three runs on eight hits and struck out five.
Game 2: Concordia 4, Carleton 5
The scenario was the same for Concordia in Game as they took a lead into the bottom of the fourth before the Knights scored three unanswered runs.
The Cobbers led 4-2 after three innings after CC scored three times in the top of the third. Carleton matched the 3-run inning in the fourth and was able to keep Concordia off the board for the final four frames.
Concordia held a 9-6 advantage in hits in the finale, which gave the Cobbers a 15-14 edge for the DH.
Hauck and Hofer had multiple-hit games. Hauck was 2-for-3 and scored two runs, and Hofer was 3-for-3 with two RBI.
The biggest of the game for Concordia was in the third when Jocelyn Maki connected on a 2-out pitch and sent it over the fence for a 2-run homer, which gave CC a 4-1 lead. The long ball was Maki's third of the season.
Concordia split the pitching duties between Kegen Coulson and Lauren Staples. Coulson went the first 3.0 innings and gave way to Staples, who entered in the fourth and pitched three scoreless innings. She only allowed one hit and struck out one.
The Cobbers will close out the 2024 season when they play at St. Olaf on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
