4-Run Innings Are Key In Split Against St. Scholastica
Concordia split its two games against St. Scholastica in a doubleheader that was determined by a pair of 4-run innings in each game. The Saints posted a 4-run third frame in the opener to claim a 6-5 win and the Cobbers returned the favor in Game 2 with a 4-run fourth inning and went on to post a 7-4 victory.
DULUTH, Minn. (4/19/26)---Concordia split a pair of Sunday morning games in Superior, Wis.
The doubleheader against the Saints was determined by a pair of 4-run innings in each game. The Saints posted a 4-run third frame in the opener to claim a 6-5 win and the Cobbers returned the favor in Game 2 with a 4-run fourth inning and went on to post a 7-4 victory.
The win in the finale is the first conference victory of the year for the Cobbers who move to 1-9 against league opponents and 9-15 overall.
Kailee Falconer, Reese Hauck and Kate Gulbranson keyed the win for Concordia in the second game. All three players had multiple-hit games and combined to go 7-for-11 with five RBI, four runs scored and a trio of extra-base hits. Kegen Coulson got the victory in Game 2 as she went 5.2 innings and only allowed three earned runs and one walk.
Game 1: Concordia 5, St. Scholastica 6
The Cobbers were in control of the opener until St. Scholastica posted their 4-run third inning. CC opened the game by scoring one run in the first, two more in the second and added a fourth score in the third. The game changed in the bottom of the fram when the Saints plated four runs on two hits. CSS loaded the bases and then came up with a 1-out double that scored three runs.
The Saints put up the winning runs in the fourth inning before Concordia got to within one on a homer off the bat of Hauck. The long ball was Hauck's fourth overall HR of the season and second in MIAC play.
Concordia was outhit 11-7 in Game 1 with Jocelyn Maki recording the only multiple-hit game. She went 2-for-4 and had two RBI.
Mallory Leitner and Coulson split the pitching duties. Leitner went the first 4.0 innings and Coulson hurled the last two and didn't allow a run.
Game 2: Concordia 7, St. Scholastica 4
The second game revolved around the 4-run frame in the fourth and then CC was able to add a pair of insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Both teams struck for a single score in the first before the Saints took a brief 3-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.
In the game-deciding fourth, Concordia loaded the bases and then Olivia Olberding came up with a 1-run single and Falconer cleared the bases with a double to right center.
Gulbranson came up with an RBI single in the fifth and duplicated her feat in the seventh after Hauck opened the inning with a leadoff double.
Concordia will look to host its first games at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex on Tuesday, Apr. 21 against Carleton.
