Coulson And Leitner Throw Cobbers A Split At 20-Win St. Kate's
ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/22/26)---Pitchers Kegen Coulson and Mallory Leitner came up with their best performances of the conference season as they held 20-win St. Catherine to only two runs in Game 2 of the Cobbers' doubleheader on Wednesday. The success in the circle led to Concordia coming away with a split against the Wildcats.
The Cobbers lost the opener 9-1 but then Coulson and Leitner combined to keep the St. Catherine offense quiet for six of the seven innings as Concordia won for the second time in its last four games.
Concordia is now 10-18 on the season and 2-12 in conference play while the loss in the second game ended the Wildcats' 3-game win streak and drop the to 20-11 in all games and 9-4 against MIAC foes.
In addition to the quality pitching in the second game, the Cobbers also got solid production out of the Top 5 in their batting order. Kailee Falconer, Morgan Guggisberg, Megan Guggisberg and Jocelyn Maki all had at least one hit in each game while Reese Hauck was 2-for-4 with a triple in the finale. The five hitters combined for six of the team's seven RBI on the day.
Falconer continues to lead the team in hitting. She has a .366 batting average on the year and has hit in six straight games.
Megan Guggisberg and Maki are the other two CC hitters with an average above the .300 mark for the season. Megan Guggisberg, who had a home run in Game 2, is hitting .349 and leads the team in long balls with four. Maki has a .308 average.
Game 1: Concordia 1, St. Catherine 9 (6 innings)
Concordia was slow to get off the bus in the opener. CC conceded a single run in the first and then four more in the second to fall behind 5-0 before the game was less than three innings old.
The Cobbers were able to scratch across their only run of Game 1 in the fourth frame when Megan Guggisberg singled and Maki followed with a double that cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Wildcats finished off the opener by plating four runs in the sixth inning to push the final score to 9-1.
CC had four hits in the game with the Top 4 of Falconer, the two Guggisbergs and Maki all having a single base knock in the contest.
Leitner had the start in the first game and went 3.0 innings before Coulson finished off the final 2.1 frames.
Game 2: Concordia 6, St. Catherine 2
The Cobbers wasted no time grabbing control in the nightcap. After a 1‑out single from Morgan Guggisberg in the top of the first frame, her sister Megan delivered the first big swing of the game – a 2‑run homer to left that instantly put Concordia up 2–0.
That early jolt gave Concordia momentum they never surrendered.
Coulson started the game and was efficient and composed. She scattered five hits over five innings while allowing just two runs. She faced only 20 batters and kept the Wildcats off balance, letting her defense work behind her.
When the Wildcats threatened in the fifth—scoring twice to cut the lead to 4–2 – Leitner
entered the circle and slammed the door. She tossed two scoreless innings with no strikeouts but plenty of soft contact, earning her first save of the season.
The Cobbers' offense came alive again in the fifth. After Megan Guggisberg singled, Maki ripped an RBI double, and moments later Hauck tripled to the gap to make it 4–0.
Hauck wasn't done—she added an RBI single in the sixth to push the lead to 5–2.
Speed helped produce the final run. After reaching on an error, Alexa Krueger stole second, then scored on Olivia Olberding's RBI groundout, stretching the lead to 6–2 and giving the Cobbers breathing room heading into the final frame.
Concordia will get a couple days rest before hosting Bethel on Cornstock Saturday at 1 p.m.
