A Wire-To-Wire Wednesday Victory
Concordia went wire-to-wire to beat Carleton and record its fourth straight victory.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/06/16)—Concordia went wire-to-wire to beat Carleton and record its fourth straight victory.
The Cobbers never trailed against the Knights and scored 17 points in three of the four quarters as they rolled up a 63-40 win. Concordia is now 2-0 in 2016, 4-1 against conference opponents and 8-4 overall.
It was a team effort in the win over Carleton. Concordia had three players score at least 10 points, had nine players record points and played 16 players.
The Cobbers opened the game with their first 17-point period. Concordia held Carleton to 2-of-10 shooting in the first 10 minutes of the game and went 7-for-15 from the field and 2-for-3 from outside the arc on the offensive end to gain a 17-8 lead.
The second quarter was more of the same with Concordia outscoring the Knights 17-7 and going 7-for-14 from the floor. The Cobbers were even able to convert on buzzer beater to end the first half. Senior Katie Rosenfeldt drove towards the basket as the seconds ticked down on the period and put up a shot with two seconds left. Rosenfeldt's shot didn't fall but Jenna Januschka was in the right place for the rebound and she made the put back as the buzzer sounded.
Concordia held a 34-15 lead at the break and then extended the margin to 30 points in the first 6:30 of the third quarter. The Cobbers scored seven of the first nine points of the second half which started a 16-5 run to put the game out of reach at 50-20.
Carleton held a 14-12 edge in the fourth quarter – the only period that Concordia didn't score 17 points. The Cobbers used 16 players in the final period of play and had four different players score points.
Concordia finished the game by shooting 47.2% (25-for-53) from the floor and 53.3% (8-for-15) from 3-point range. The eight made 3-pointers ties a season high and the 53.5% from outside the arc is a high water mark for the year.
The Cobbers outrebounded Carleton 37-31 and were able to force 16 turnovers. CC used those miscues to hold a 16-8 edge in points off of turnovers.
MISS 500
Senior Olivia Johnson continues to creep closer to the 500-rebound milestone. The Walcott, N.D. native had a game-high seven rebounds and now has 485 career boards. She needs 15 more rebounds to become the 17th player in program history to record 500 rebounds in a career.
MISS DOUBLE DIGIT
Junior Jenna Januschka had another double-digit scoring outing. Januschka scored a game-high 16 points to record her sixth straight 10-plus point contest. She has scored at least 10 points in 11 of the team's 12 games and is averaging 15.6 points per game. She is fifth in the MIAC in scoring after averaging 4.3 points per game last season.
COOL HAND
Junior guard Greta Walsh calmly sank three of her four shots from behind the arc and finished with 15 points. Her timely field goals helped keep the Knights from getting closer in the first and second quarters. Walsh upped her season scoring average to 13.3 points per game. She leads the team in trifectas. She has made 27 shots from outside the arc and is tied for third in the MIAC in 3-pointers made.
WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will start a three-game road trip when they play at St. Benedict on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. The Cobbers will then play at St. Mary's and Macalester next week. The Blazers beat the Scots 63-56 in overtime on Wednesday and are currently right behind Concordia in the league standings at 3-2. Like the Cobbers, they are also 8-4 overall.
