Second-Half Hope

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/14/17)--- Concordia got stronger as the game got longer but unfortunately for the Cobbers gave up a 20-6 run in the second quarter and lost 75-60 at No.4-ranked St. Thomas.

Concordia trailed by seven after the opening quarter and cut the lead to five points to start the second period. The Cobbers would then shoot 33.3% (4-for-12) from the field and post five turnovers in the decisive second quarter.

Concordia is now 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the MIAC while the Tommies remain unbeaten on the year. UST ups its record to 14-0 in all games and 8-0 in MIAC play.

The Cobbers wound up outscoring St. Thomas 30-25 in the second half which included a 13-8 edge in the fourth quarter. Concordia shot 54.5% (6-for-11) from outside the arc while the CC defense tightened and held the Tommies to 20.0% (5-for-15) from the floor and 2-for-6 from 3-point range in the final two quarters of play.

Concordia finished the game by shooting 41.2% (21-for-51) from the floor and 58.8% (10-for-17) from outside the arc while UST shot 40.3% (25-for-62) from the field and 45.0% (9-for-20) from long range.

Concordia had three of its five starting players score in double figures. Senior Greta Walsh had a team-high 15 points and went 3-for-3 from outside the arc. Junior Cassidy Rahman was 3-for-4 from long range and had 11 points. Grace Wolhowe went 2-for-3 from 3-point range and finished with 10 points. Wolhowe and Kirstin Simmons each recorded a team-high five rebounds.

3-POINT PLAYS: The 10 made 3-pointers by the Cobbers are the second most this season. CC made 11 shots from beyond the arc against St. Catherine at home on Dec. 7. The 3-point mark of 58.8% is also the second highest of the year. Concordia shot 61.1% against the Wildcats.

MOVING UP THE CHARTS: Greta Walsh's 15 points gives her 1,030 for her career which pushes her into the No.26 spot on the school's all-time scoring list. She needs only two points to jump into the Top 25.

ST. PAUL SATURDAY SUCCESS: Junior guard Cassidy Rahman scored 11 points and has now scored in double figures in the Cobbers' last two Saturday games in St. Paul.  All this after not scoring more than nine points in the first 12 games of the year. Rahman is averaging 8.3 points per game in the last three games and has a 5.1 ppg average for the year.  
 
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will hit the road for its next MIAC series. The Cobbers will head to Minneapolis to square off against Augsburg on Jan. 20-21. The Auggies are 10-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the MIAC and beat No.5-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire on Friday night.
