MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/1/17)—If Concordia's game with Augsburg would have only been three quarters the Cobbers would have come away with a 43-41 win over the Auggies.
Unfortunately for Concordia the rules of the game include the third quarter where the Cobbers were outscored 24-11 which sent them to 65-54 loss.
The defeat ends a one-game win streak for the Cobbers and pushes their record to 6-14 overall and 3-10 in the MIAC. Augsburg wins for the second time in the last three games and moves to 11-9 overall and 4-9 in league play.
Concordia built up 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a powerhouse inside game. Sophomore forward Kirstin Simmons, who was making her first start of the year, went 3-for-3 from the field and grabbed five rebounds.
The Cobbers inside game slowed in the second quarter but Concordia was able to hold the lead for the entire 10-minute period and took a 28-24 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter started well for Concordia as Simmons hit a jumper to give CC a six-point lead at 30-24. Subsequent jumpers by Lincoln Haiby and Jamie Mentzer gave the Cobbers a 37-30 lead with 5:32 left in the period.
That's when the floor fell out from underneath CC. The Cobbers would be outscored 18-2 for the rest of the third quarter and shot 0-for-5 from the field and committed five turnovers.
Concordia trailed 48-39 after three periods of play and would then stay even with the Auggies in the final quarter. The Cobbers got within three points at the start of the final period but then an 8-2 run by Augsburg pushed the lead back to nine points.
The Cobbers shot 35.2% (19-for-54) from the floor and 35.0% (7-for-20) from 3-point range while the Auggies connected on 38.5% (25-for-65) of their shots from the field and 26.1% (6-for-23) from beyond the arc.
The game was one for the books for Simmons. She not only had a career-high 11 points, but also had a career-high 13 rebounds which earned her the first double-double of her career.
Along with Simmons, junior Cassidy Rahman ended the night with 11 points and five rebounds and senior Greta Walsh added eight points.
GLASS CLEANERS: Concordia outrebounded Augsburg 48-42 and had eight players with at least three boards on the night.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will hit the pavement again when they travel to St. Paul to take on Macalester on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. The Scots are 3-10 in the league and 9-11 overall and are coming off an 82-48 loss at St. Catherine on Wednesday.
