A Tale Of Two Fourth Quarters
It was a tale of two fourth quarters on the weekend for the Cobbers as they were outscored 24-13 in the final period and lost 70-60 at Wis.-River Falls.
RIVER FALLS, Wis. (12/10/17)---It was a tale of two fourth quarters for Concordia in their back-to-back games on the weekend. On Saturday the Cobbers outscored Augsburg 19-6 in the final period to come away with the win. On Sunday Concordia was outscored 24-13 in the fourth quarter in River Falls and lost 70-60 to the Falcons.
The good news for Concordia is that the game was a non-conference contest so the loss won't go against their league standing. The bad news is that the loss ends the Cobbers' two-game win streak.
Concordia is now 5-4 as they finish off the 2017 portion of their season schedule. Wis.-River Falls has now won three straight and moves to 6-2 on the year.
The Cobbers blistered the nets in the first half as they shot 60.9% (14-for-23) from the floor and an eye-popping 81.8% (9-for-11) from 3-point range. Those totals helped Concordia take a 39-31 lead at the break. The Cobbers scored 22 points in the second quarter.
Concordia wasn't able to fan their shooting flames in the second half and started to cool down in the third quarter. The Cobbers were outscored 15-8 in the period and made only 33.3% (3-for-9) of their attempts from the floor and 20.0% (1-for-5) of their shots from long range.
The tables completely turned in the fourth quarter with the Cobbers being held scoreless from 3-point range and giving up a trio of treys to the Falcons as well as allowing the Falcons to shoot 52.9% (9-for-17) from the field.
The Cobbers finished by shooting 48.9% (22-for-45) from the floor and 52.6% (10-for-19) from 3-point range. The 3-point field goal percentage is the highest of the season for CC while the 10 made shots from outside the arc are the second most in a game this year.
Sophomore Mira Ellefson led the Cobber offense as she put up a career-high 17 points. She was 7-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-5 from outside the arc.
Jamie Mentzer made a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Lincoln Haiby had a team-high four rebounds and added five points while Grace Wolhowe finished with nine points and hauled down three rebounds.
Concordia outrebounded the Falcons 30-26 in the game marking the eighth time in nine games this season that the Cobbers have outrebounded their opponent.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a three-week break to study for finals, prepare for the annual Christmas practice and celebrate the holiday season. The Cobbers will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 31 when they travel to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica at 1 p.m. The Saints are currently 3-4 on the season and dropped a 56-51 decision against Bethany Lutheran on Saturday.
