Third Quarter Stumble

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/13/18)---Concordia outscored Carleton 43-42 in the first, second and fourth quarters combined unfortunately a 12-point deficit in the third period proved to be the difference as the Cobbers fell 64-53.

For the second straight game Concordia wound up losing by low double-digits and for the second straight game the contest seemed much closer.

Concordia trailed the Knights 15-9 after the first period but then used an 8-0 run in the final 2:25 of the second quarter to cut the halftime margin to two points at 28-26.

The Cobbers would outscore Carleton 17-14 in the final frame but it wouldn't be enough to overcome a 22-10 deficit in the third quarter. Concordia shot just 8.3% (1-for-12) from the floor in the decisive third period while the Knights made eight field goals, shot 53.3% from the floor and held an 11-6 rebounding margin.

The loss is the sixth straight for Concordia who falls to 5-9 in all games and 2-5 in conference play. Carleton wins for the second straight game and is now 7-8 in all games and an even .500 in MIAC games at 4-4.

The Cobbers offense was as cold as the temperature outside Memorial Auditorium. Concordia shot 25.4% (15-for-59) from the floor and 22.7% (5-for-22) from outside the arc. CC mad way at the free throw line where they connected on 18 of their 23 attempts.

Carleton made 47.8% (22-for-46) of their attempts from the floor and shot 30.4% (7-for-23) from long range.

The Knights held a 37-26 edge in rebounding.

Concordia had a trio of players finish in double figures in scoring. Grace Wolhowe and Lincoln Haiby both put up a dozen points. Wolhowe went 6-for-6 from the free throw line while Haiby was 4-for-6 from the floor.

Mira Ellefson was the third member of CC to come away with at least 10 points. She was 2-for-5 from 3-point range and had 10 points to go along with six boards.   

Kirstin Simmons had a team-high seven rebounds and also added eight points.  

GRACE AT THE LINE: Grace Wolhowe's 6-for-6 shooting from the free throw line marked the eighth time this season the junior guard hasn't missed a free throw attempt in a game. Wolhowe has now gone 6-for-6 from the line twice this year and leads the Cobbers with an 83.7% success rate from the foul line. Wolhowe is currently fourth in the MIAC in free throw percentage.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have its first three-game week of the season. The Cobbers will host Bethel on Monday, Jan. 15 in a make-up game from Dec. 4. CC will then play at St. Catherine on Wednesday, Jan. 17 and travel to Northfield to take on St. Olaf on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m.
