Cobbers Can't Get Past Royals In Conference Opener
Concordia was outscored from around the basket and lost 63-50 at Bethel in the MIAC opener for both teams.
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (12/04/24)---The Cobbers made one more 3-pointer than Bethel in the MIAC opener for both teams but it was the area around the basket which sent Concordia to a 63-50 defeat.
The two teams were very similar on the stat sheet for the 40 minutes of play except for points in the pain and second-chance points. Concordia was outscored 42-24 in points in the pain and the Royals held a 22-12 advantage in second-chance points.
The loss drops the Cobbers' overall record to 3-3 on the season. Bethel has won three straight games and is now 5-1.
The game had six lead changes and four tie scores, all of which came in the first half of play.
Concordia had the advantage for most of the first quarter before Bethel scored the final basket of the period to take a 13-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
The game changed at the start of the second quarter when then Royals scored 11 of the first 14 points and grabbed a 24-15 lead midway through the second stanza.
Concordia cut the lead to four points at 28-24 at halftime but a 7-0 run in the first 5 minutes of the third quarter enabled Bethel to take command of the game.
The Cobbers shot 34.7% (17-for-49) from the floor and 40.0% (4-for-10) from 3-point range for the game. The 10 attempted shots from distance are the fewest for the Cobbers this season, who were averaging 19.6 attempts and 8.6 makes from 3-point range heading into the MIAC opener.
The Royals shot 41.4% (24-for-58) from the field and 27.3% (3-for-11) from distance.
Both teams made 12 free throws in the game with CC going 12-for-13 and BU posting a 12-for-15 mark.
Senior forward Makayla Anderson led the Cobbers in points and rebounds. She recorded 11 points and had six boards.
Carlee Sieben was 1-for-2 from outside the arc and finished with 10 points.
Taylor Safranski and Peyton Breidenbach both came away with seven points.
Concordia will return to MIAC action when they play at Gustavus on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m.
