Cobbers Leave No Doubt In Championship Game
Concordia left little doubt in the championship game of the Gratz Park Private Wealth Holiday Tournament hosted by Transylvania University (Ky.). The Cobbers scored the first 15 points of the title bout against Case Western Reserve, never trailed in the game and cruised to an 80-54 win.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (12/30/24)---Concordia left little doubt in the championship game of the Gratz Park Private Wealth Holiday Tournament hosted by Transylvania University (Ky.).
The Cobbers scored the first 15 points of the title bout against Case Western Reserve, never trailed in the game and cruised to an 80-54 win.
Concordia was so successful on Monday that they held a double-digit lead over the Spartans for all but 3:30 of the 40:00 played in the contest.
The win is the third in a row for the Cobbers who are now 6-4 on the season. Case Western, who beat 2024 NCAA DIII runner-up Transylvania on Sunday, fell to 5-5 for the year.
Concordia used 3-point field goals by Greta Tollefson, Carlee Sieben and Molly Musland to charge out of the gate to a 15-0 lead. CC went 4-for-6 and made both of its free throws to seize control of the game in the first 5:03.
The Cobbers went on to post a 23-5 lead after the first quarter. Case Western was able to trim the lead at the half by outscoring Concordia 20-16 in the second quarter but CC responded by coming away with a 22-12 scoring advantage in the third period and a 19-17 margin in the final 10 minutes of play.
Concordia held a decided advantage around the basket where they outrebounded the Spartans 47-32 and posted a 38-18 margin in points in the paint. CC also used 14 offensive rebounds to post a 17-9 edge in second-chance points. The 47 total rebounds are the second-highest of the season for CC against teams from the United States.
The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 44.3% (27-for-61) from the field and 36.8% (7-for-19) from beyond the arc. Concordia also went 19-for-23 from the free throw line.
Concordia was able to play 15 players in the game and 11 found their way to the scoring column. The senior trio of Sieben, Makayla Anderson and Tollefson once again led the Cobbers in Kentucky.
Sieben scored a team-high 19 points and dished out a season-high seven assists.
Anderson came through with 16 points to go along with six rebounds and four helpers.
Tollefson added a season-high 12 points and was 5-for-7 from the field.
Jordyn Kahler and Taylor Safranski led the Cobber glass crew. They each had seven rebounds with Kahler recording a game-high five offensive boards.
Concordia will look to continue its recent success when it returns home to conference play and host St. Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m.
