Second Half Stops Cobbers Against Cardinals

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/04/25)---Concordia led 41-30 at the halftime break but was outscored 33-17 in the third and fourth quarters and lost 63-58 to St. Mary's in the first game of 2025.
The Cobbers found their offensive rhythm in the first half as they shot 48.3% from the floor and connected on six of their nine attempts from outside the arc. The second half was a different story as they made shot 15.8% from the field and went 3-for-17 from 3-point range.
The loss ends a 3-game win streak for Concordia and is the team's first loss at home since Jan. 7, 2023. The Cobbers are now 6-5 in all games this season and 1-3 in the MIAC.
St. Mary's snaps a 4-game losing streak and is now 4-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Cobbers only trailed for 20 seconds in the first half. They scored the first eight points of the game and held a 21-19 lead after the first quarter. CC was able to push the lead to double digits at halftime thanks to a 9-0 run in the final 4 minutes of play.
Concordia kept the lead for the entire third quarter, but had a 9-point advantage trimmed to four points when the Cardinals scored the final five points of the period.
St. Mary's came out in the fourth quarter and scored the first seven points to take a 3-point lead at 54-51.
The game stayed within one possession for the remainder of the final quarter until SMU 6-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 3:30 of play to seal the win.
The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 29.9% (20-for-67) from the floor, 34.6% (9-for-26) from distance and 81.8% (9-for-11) from the foul line. The Cardinals shot 39.3% (22-for-56) from the field, 31.8% (7-for-22) from 3-point range and 75.0% (12-for-16) from the free throw line.
St. Mary's held a 47-28 advantage in the rebound column and finished with a 28-18 points in the paint edge.
Carlee Sieben led the Cobbers with 13 points and added a team-high four assists. Makayla Anderson had 12 points and three rebounds, while Greta Tollefson came through with eight points and a team-high five rebounds.
The Cobbers will look to get back on the winning track when they host St. Catherine on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
