Anderson's Milestone Moment Completes Hallmark Win
Makayla Anderson scored her 1,000th career point and Concordia outdueled St. Olaf down the stretch in a game that had all the markings of a feel-good Hallmark movie classic.
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/11/25)---Concordia's back-and-forth rollercoaster at St. Olaf turned out like all Hallmark movies – nothing but good vibes, happiness and smiles.
The Cobbers posted a 60-57 win in a game that featured 18 lead changes and eight tie scores.
While the final outcome of the game turned into a real cliffhanger, the real Hollywood moment came in the fourth quarter when Makayla Anderson scored her 1,000th career point.
Anderson entered the game needing 19 points to become the 29th player in Concordia history to reach the 1000-point milestone. She had 18 points after the first three quarters of play and entered the elite scoring club when she connected on a layup with 3:20 left in the fourth period. Her 1,000th and 1,001st points gave the Cobbers a crucial 54-51 lead – a lead they would never relinquish.
In addition to becoming the 29th Cobber to reach 1000 points, Anderson is also the 12th player to collect 1000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.
The game was close for the entire 40 minutes of play with neither team holding more than a 6-point lead. The Cobbers led 16-14 after the first quarter and 29-28 at the halftime break. CC upped its lead by a single point after 30 minutes of play and led 41-39 heading into the nail-biting fourth frame.
St. Olaf scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to their largest lead of the day at 47-41. Concordia responded by scoring nine of the next 11 points and grabbed a 50-49 lead with 5 minutes left in regulation.
The Oles led for the final time at 51-50 when they connected on a layup with 4:47 left to play.
Carlee Sieben got loose underneath to put CC up 52-51 and then Anderson came through with her milestone moment to up the lead to three points.
St. Olaf got to within one point on a pair of occasions in the final minute of play but each time Concordia had drained clutch free throws to provide the answer. Anderson made two straight with 30 seconds left and then senior Greta Tollefson sealed the deal with two made foul shots with 1 second remaining on the clock.
Anderson finished with 24 points and hauled down 10 rebounds to post her second straight double-double. She scored 46 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in CC's two wins on the week.
Sieben went 3-for-7 from distance and finished with 19 points. She also had two assists and two rebounds.
Tollefson made it a trio of senior double-digit scorers. She was 4-for-7 from the floor, 2-for-2 from the free throw line and finished with 10 points.
Concordia will look to continue its success when they host St. Benedict on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
