Winning Streaks Extended
Concordia held off a late-game comeback from St. Benedict and earned a hard-fought 80-68 win in a critical MIAC contest. The victory is the sixth straight over the Bennies – the longest winning streak for CC over CSB since 2005. The win is also the third straight for the Cobbers and sixth in the past seven games.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/15/25)---Concordia held off a late-game comeback from St. Benedict and earned a hard-fought 80-68 win in a critical MIAC contest.
The victory is the sixth straight over the Bennies – the longest winning streak for CC over CSB since 2005. The win is also the third straight for the Cobbers and sixth in the past seven games.
Concordia is now 4-3 in the MIAC and moves up into a tie for fifth place in the league standings. CC is 9-5 in all games. St. Ben's loses for the third straight game and is 9-5 overall and a similar 403 in league play.
The Cobbers led for almost the entire game. They held a 20-16 lead after the first quarter, a 44-29 advantage at the half and then a 61-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Concordia led by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, held an 18-point edge in the third frame and had a similar 18-point at the start of the fourth quarter when Genevieve Gruba got free for a layup.
The game took a 180-degree turn after Gruba's layup. St. Ben's ran off 10 straight points to cut the margin to single digits for the first time since the start of the second quarter. The Bennies upped that streak by scoring 14 of the first 18 points in the fourth period to trim the lead all the way down to six points at 65-59 with 6:04 left to play.
Senior Carlee Sieben had the next two answers for the Cobbers. She scored on a layup and a 3-pointer to give CC a 70-61 lead with 3:46 remaining in the game. A made jumper by Taylor Safranski gave Concordia the double-digit lead and the Cobbers were able to keep the Bennies at arm's length for the final 3 minutes of the game.
Concordia held the edge in rebounding and field goals made for the game. CC outrebounded St. Ben's 40-26 and made six more field goals. The Cobbers also had a 26-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Sieben had her most productive night of the MIAC season. She was 7-for-11 from the floor, 8-for-8 from the free throw line and finished with 24 points to go with four assists. It was her fourth game of the year with at least 20 points.
Makayla Anderson, who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th career point, picked up her third straight double-double. She scored 16 points and had a career-high 17 rebounds. She is now third in the MIAC in rebounds per game (8.7) in conference contests.
Safranski added to her MIAC-leading assist total. She had four dimes in the game and has 29 in the seven league games and 56 in all games. Safranski also had five rebounds vs. CSB.
Jordyn Kahler was 2-for-4 from outside the arc and finished with eight points. She also had five rebounds.
Concordia will look to continue its recent success when they play at Carleton on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
