COON RAPIDS, Minn. (10/08/12)—In the final day of a cold and blustery MIAC Championship Meet, Concordia shot their best score of the tournament and finished in sixth place. Sophomore Katie Nelson fired three rounds in the mid 80's and led the Cobbers with a 255 (86-83-86).
The sixth-place finish was down two places from the team's breakout performance in 2011 when five freshman finished in fourth place. Concordia's third-round score of 342 this year capped a final total of 1042 (346-352-344). All three single-round scores for the Cobbers wound up being in the top 10 of their best scores in 2012.
Nelson was consistent throughout the weather-plagued tournament. Her best score was an 83 in the second round which was her second best score of the year and tied for the ninth best round of the season by a CC golfer. Nelson's best score of the year was an 81 in the second at the Southwest MN State Invite. It was the fourth time in five multiple-round events this season that her second round score was the lowest of the tournament.
Fellow sophomore Amy Mireault was one spot off of Nelson's 18th-place finish. Mireault carded a total of 258 (82-91-85) and was in a tie for 19th place. Her first round score of 82 was the low round for any CC golfer at the meet. Kristi Opatz and Molly Zavadil were the No.3 and 4 golfers for Concordia. Opatz went 87-89-86 to finish with a 262 and place in a tie for 26th. Zavadil got better with each round and ended up in a tie for 30th with a score of 267 (91-89-87). Tiffany Swanson was the fifth member of the conference tournament team for the Cobbers and wound up with a final score of 281 (97-93-91).
