Top 25 Dual-Meet Match-Up
No.22-ranked Concordia lost to No.2-ranked Augsburg in a match-up of teams ranked in the Top 25.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (1/20/17)--- Cole Sladek continued his hot streak in 2017 but it wasn't enough for Concordia in the dual between Top 25 teams and the No.22-ranked Cobbers lost 33-7 at No.2-ranked Augsburg.
Sladek and fellow junior Jacob Johnson provided the two wins in Concordia's match with the Auggies. Sladek posted a 12-3 major decision over Tone Fuenffinger at 157 and Johnson came away with a 5-3 overtime win over Austin Boniface at 174.
Concordia had to forfeit the match at 125 due to an injury but then lost three matches by decision, three by major decision and one by pin fall to an Auggie lineup which featured four wrestlers ranked in the Top 10 of the nation.
Adam Presler and Kody Van Den Eykel had the closest matches for the Cobbers. Presler lost in overtime in the first sudden victory period at 141. Presler gave up a takedown 23-seconds into the extra period and lost 3-1. Van Den Eykel raced out to a 8-1 lead in the first period and held an 8-3 edge heading into the second period of his match at 197. Unfortunately he gave up a near fall midway through the third period and lost 10-8.
Sladek remained unbeaten on the year as he moved to 12-0. He was up 4-1 after the first period and after a pair of takedowns. He then widened his lead in the second stanza with an escape and takedown. Sladek added two takedowns and a riding time point in the third to win by nine.
Johnson earned his 5-3 win with a takedown at the 38-second mark of the sudden victory period in OT. Johnson trailed 3-0 heading into the third period but then tied the bout with an escape and a takedown with only 7-seconds remaining in the match. The win ups Johnson's record to 16-10 on the year.
The victory also avenges a loss at last year's dual meet between the teams. Johnson fell 4-0 to Boniface in 2016 at Concordia.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will continue with their schedule with a pair of dual meets. The Cobbers will travel to Dickinson State to take on the Blue Hawks on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. CC will then square off against St. John's in Collegeville on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
