Bonus-Point Bonanza
Concordia won seven matches, all of the bonus-point variety, and cruised to a 36-12 win over St. John's.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/31/20)---Concordia won the first four matches in their dual with St. John's, captured seven overall and went gate to wire to beat the Johnnies 36-12.
All seven of the Cobbers' wins on the night were of the bonus-point variety as Concordia beat the Johnnies for the eighth consecutive time. CC has also won 13 of the past 15 matches in their series with St. John's.
Concordia is now 6-4 in dual meets this season while the Johnnies fall to 1-5.
The team dual started at 141 so that the Top 10 showdown at 133 between No.6-ranked Jacob Prunty from Concordia and No.5-ranked Noah Becker from St. John's could take center stage as the final bout of the night.
Freshman Cade Lundeen wasted little time in giving the Cobbers an early lead. He distanced himself from his opponent in the second and third periods and came away with a 14-2 major decision. The victory was the first bonus-point decision of the match and put the Cobbers up 4-0. It also earned Lundeen his 13th win of the year.
Bret Wilson also started slow in his match but found his legs late and cruised to an 18-2 technical fall win at 149. Wilson's sixth win, and second tech fall victory, of the season gave Concordia a 9-0 lead after two matches.
While the first two bouts went the distance and picked up pace at the end, the next two were over quickly. The Special K duo of Kellen Schauer and Kaden Spindler both came away with wins before their matches got to the second period.
Schauer put his opponent's shoulders on the mat at the 2:15 mark of the first period at 157 and then Spindler finished off his opponent in a tidy 30 seconds. The two pins pushed Concordia's lead to 21-0 and all but sealed the team dual win.
Schauer is now 9-6 on the year and has four wins by a pin.
Concordia would drop its first bout of the night at 174 but then freshman Ayden Friese continued the bonus-point spree by claiming a 14-6 major decision at 184. The Cobbers led 25-3 after Friese's eighth win of the year.
Fellow freshman Gabe Zierden took control of his match at 197 in the first 30 seconds, scoring a takedown and cruising to a 21-4 tech fall victory. Zierden earned his 15th win of the year which is second on the team.
Cole Kubesh would get the final win of the night for CC as he stepped on the mat to accept the forfeit win and record his team-leading 16th win of the year.
The Top 10 showdown went the way of Becker as he went up 3-0 after the first period with an early takedown. Prunty could never find a way to attack Becker and lost 8-2.
INSIDE STAT INFO: Sophomore Kaden Spindler is now 7-3 on the season and has won six of his seven matches by a pin. He is third on the team in pins behind Kubesh (9) and Lundeen (7).
UP NEXT: Concordia will head back to multi-team invites when they travel to Eau Claire, Wis. For the second time this season. The Cobbers will compete in the Don Parker Open at Wis.-Eau Claire on Feb. 8. CC posted a second-place finish at the Wis.-Eau Claire Invite on Nov. 23.
