A Big, Beautiful, Bonus-Point Bonanza Win Over Jamestown
Concordia lived by the old wrestling adage, “team points are good, bonus team points are even better,” in its 28-16 win over Jamestown in Memorial Auditorium.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (02/02/22)--- Concordia lived by the old wrestling adage, "team points are good, bonus team points are even better," in its 28-16 win over Jamestown in Memorial Auditorium.
The Cobbers claimed six of the 10 individual bouts in the match, but four of those victories were of the bonus point variety. The Jimmies were only able to come up a pair of bonus-point wins as CC beat Jamestown for the sixth straight time.
The win pushes the Cobbers' dual-meet mark above the .500 mark. Concordia is now 6-5 in dual meets. Jamestown ends its dual-meet season with a 6-6 mark.
The Cobber victory was set up in the lighter weights as Concordia won three of the first five matches – and all those were bonus-point wins.
After a narrow 3-2 loss in the 125-lb weight class, Jake Nohre delivered a huge pin at 133. The senior, who was seeing his first dual-meet action of the year, came up with a takedown and a near fall before finally putting away his opponent at the 2:55 mark of the first period. It was Nohre's third pin of the year and sixth overall victory.
Concordia trailed 9-6 after a pin by the Jimmies, but then Kellen Schauer and Tyler Bents recorded 10 team points in two matches and gave CC a lead they would never relinquish.
Schauer earned the Cobbers' second pin of the night when he pinned his opponent with just 33-seconds left in the match. Schauer led 6-0after the first period and 8-1 after two before getting an escape and a takedown before finishing off the match at 6:27.
Schauer is now 11-8 on the year and 4-2 in matches determined by a pin.
Bents dominated his bout at 157 from the start, but then turned it on in the third period and won 14-1 to earn four team points for the major decision. Bents led 6-0 after two periods, but then had an escape, two takedowns and a near fall to go along with a riding point to win by 13.
The victory gives Bents eight wins on the year and it is also his second major-decision win of the year.
The Cobbers would close out the match on consecutive wins by Kaden Spindler and Ayden Friese at 174 and 184.
Spindler waited until the dying second of his match to score the bout-winning reversal and come away with a 2-0 win. Neither wrestler scored a point through the first two periods, and then Spindler was in the down position to start the third period. He was able to turn on his opponents with less than 30-seconds left in the third and held on for the 2-0 victory.
The win is Spindler's 11th of the season. He is now 11-8 and has won five of his last six matches.
Friese cemented the Cobber win with his first pin of the season. He trailed 2-0 before scoring 11 straight points on his way to getting the pin at the 2:01 mark. He had a pair of near falls and then finished off the six points for the team before the end of the first period.
Friese is now 14-11 on the year. His 14 wins are second most on the Cobbers.
Junior heavyweight Chase Dockter finished off the team match by earning a 5-0 win. He got an early takedown in the first period, battled through a scoreless second stanza and put away his opponent with a takedown in the third. He tacked on the riding-time point to record his ninth win of the year. Dockter is 9-6 on the season and 14 of his 15 bouts have been decided by four or fewer points.
Junior Austin Ratliff sent the fans home with a smile on their faces as he rallied to record a pin in an exhibition in the 285-lb weight class. Ratliff trailed in the second period, but was able to turn his opponent and get his shoulders to the mat at the 4:58 mark.
Ratliff then pumped up the crowd and his team by going full hype-man and earning a huge round of applause. The win was Ratliff's second of the season and second straight victory.
UP NEXT: Concordia will head to Wisconsin to participate in the Don Parker Open held at Wis.-Eau Claire on Saturday, Feb. 5. The meet will not allow spectators inside the facility, but will have live video for all mats.
