Swanson And Acuna Claim Titles To Lead Cobbers At Dragon Open
Senior Mason Swanson and first-year standout Chris Acuna led the Cobber charge across 8th Steet at the annual MSU Moorhead Dragon Open. Swanson and Acuna both won their weight divisions and paced a Concordia contingent that posted four Top 3 finishes and eight podium places.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/6/25)---Senior Mason Swanson and first-year standout Chris Acuna led the Cobber charge across 8th Steet at the annual MSU Moorhead Dragon Open.
Swanson and Acuna both won their weight divisions and paced a Concordia contingent that was short some of their regular wrestlers because of minor injuries. In the end, CC claimed eight podium finishes and four Top 3 awards at an invite that featured wrestlers from 24 teams including seven squads from NCAA Division I and Division II.
Swanson claimed the title in the 285-lb weight class in the Red Division, which is for the more experienced athletes.
Swanson, who was competing in his second multi-team invite this season, went 3-0 on the day with wins over Andreas Barnett from DII Univ. of Sioux Falls and a pin over former Minnesota Gopher wrestler Brent Eidenschink.
Acuna added another title to his brief collegiate wrestling career. He won three straight matches in the 157-lb White Division to pick up his second invite championship.
Acuna started the year by claiming the title at the Wis.-Stevens Point Pointer Open and has now gone 7-0 in multi-team invites.
Acuna beat three wrestlers from DII schools on his way to the title on Sunday. He opened with an 18-3 tech fall win over Beau Robinson from MSU Moorhead. He followed that with a 15-8 decision over Scottie Meier in the semifinals and cruised to a 15-0 tech fall win in the championship bout.
Acuna is now 7-1 on the year with his only loss coming against a DI opponent.
Nick Ankeny and Sam Dioszeghy had the other Top 3 finishes for Concordia. Ankeny went 5-1 to claim third place in the 165-lb White Division. His five wins were the most by any Cobber on the day.
Dioszeghy opened his sophomore season on the mat by claiming second place at 285 in the Red Division. Like Swanson, he also posted wins over Andreas Barnett and Brent Eidenschink.
Brady Kasprick, Aiden Downing, Zach Davidson and Zach Carnes recorded Top 8 finishes for the Cobbers.
Kasprick was sixth at 141 in the Red Division, while first-year wrestlers Downing, Davidson and Carnes all came away with 5th-place finishes in the White Division. Downing went 4-2 and was fifth at 141, Davidson was fifth at 165 with a 3-2 mark and Carnes posted a 2-2 record to finish fifth at 285.
Concordia will finish off the 2025 portion of its schedule when they compete in a pair of duals on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Sioux Falls, S.D. CC will face host Univ. of Sioux Falls at 2 p.m. and the square off against Briar Cliff at 3:30 p.m.
