Rounds And Nelson Step Up In Regional Win
Sarah Rounds and Ali Nelson stole the headlines in No.23-ranked Concordia's 1-0 win over regional foe UW-Eau Claire on Sunday.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/14/12)—Senior All-American Sarah Rounds scored the only goal of the game and goalie Ali Nelson came up with her record-tying 36th career shutout as Concordia edged regionally-ranked UW-Eau Claire 1-0 on Sunday.
The win in the final non-conference game of the year ups the Cobbers' overall record to 10-3-1. It marks the 10th straight season Concordia has won at least 10 games in a season.
The themes of the game centered around the two seniors. Rounds entered the game without a goal in her last seven contests. It was the longest dry spell of her career. That all changed in the 18th minute when she took a cut-back pass from Rochelle Hickerson at the top of the box, took one touch and then sent a curling shot into the far side netting that gave the Cobbers a 1-0 lead. It was Rounds' eighth goal of the year and her 22nd overall point. She now has 120 career points and is two points shy of the No.5 spot on the school's all-time scoring list.
Nelson didn't have to make any spectacular saves to earn her record-tying shutout. She did most of her work cutting off crossing attempts or cleaning up mishit through balls that were played too long and rolled into the penalty area. The 36 career shutouts ties the mark set by Britt Reiersgord from 2005-08.
Concordia held a 12-5 advantage in total shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal for the game. The Cobbers also had the more dangerous chances but couldn't connect on a second goal. Perhaps the best chance for the Blugolds came in the final seconds when a crossing attempt bounced inside the penalty area before being cleared out.
Hickerson led all players with four shots while Rounds and Emma Ekdahl both had a team-high two shots on frame.
Nelson was credited with four saves in the game and Eau Claire goalie Nina Behrenbrinker stopped six shots.
The Cobbers will now turn their attention to the race for their fourth MIAC regular-season championship. Concordia will host St. Kate's on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m.
