Second-Half Sisters Strike Again
For the third straight game Concordia outscored its opponent in the second half to post a win. The Cobbers scored twice in the second period against Neb. Wesleyan and beat the Prairie Wolver 2-0.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/12/21)---The Second-Half Sisters were at it again on Sunday in their game against Neb. Wesleyan. The Cobbers scored two goals in the second half against the Prairie Wolves to roll to a 2-0 win.
The victory is the third straight for the Cobbers, and in all three they have owned the second half of play. CC has outscored its opponents 10-0 in the second half of those games as they put up their first 3-game win streak since the 2019 season when they won five straight to begin the year.
Both teams had quality chances from within 10 yards out of goal in the first half but were stymied by the opposing team's keeper. Cobber goalie Bre Nelson made three point-blank stops in the 17th minute of play and then Prairie Wolves' keeper returned the favor on a pair of occasions in the final 15 minutes of the period.
Concordia (3-3-0) wasted little time after the break to get into their second-half groove. Freshman Clara Rooney threw the ball in from the left wing and then stepped inside the sideline to receive a return pass. Rooney then drove the ball diagonally across the back of the NWU defense. Fellow freshman Amber Weibye ran past the last defender and then deposited the ball in the back of the net from seven yards out.
The goal at 48:56 was Weibye's third in the last three games. The Cobbers are now 3-0 when she puts a goal on the board. Rooney also earned her first collegiate assist on the play.
The Cobbers were able to survive a pair of Neb. Wesleyan corner kicks midway through the period and then added the insurance marker in the final 10 minutes of play.
Concordia was awarded a free kick from just outside the penalty area on the left side of the box. Junior Samantha Holmberg calmly stepped up and hammered a hard shot that eluded the NWU goalie and found the back of the net.
Holmberg's strike was her third of the year which ties Weibye for the team lead and is sixth best in the conference.
Nelson finished the game with four saves to earn her second consecutive shutout. Her two shutouts are tied for the top mark in the MIAC.
Senior Lauren Tschider led the CC offensive attack with three shots. Weiybe, Lindsey Hildenbrand and Megan Barnick all had two shots as the Cobbers outshot NWU 12-5 in total shots and 6-4 in shots on goal.
UP NEXT: Concordia will take their 3-game win streak on the road when they start MIAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 4:30 p.m. at Macalester. The Scots are 2-0-1 in 2021 and are coming off a 1-0 win over Wis.-River Falls on Wednesday, Sept. 8.
